The University of Guam Herbarium: The First 50 Years

Since 1962, the University of Guam has housed the GUAM herbarium collection, which comprises important collections of terrestrial and marine plants from the tropical western Pacific. This herbarium contains 57,647 archived specimens, mostly from Micronesia, an expanse in the western Pacific the size of the continental United States and encompassing over 2,000 islands. Specimens include comprehensive collections from the region as well as the entire terrestrial and marine flora of the Mariana Islands (of which the territory of Guam is the largest and southernmost island). Unique amongst U.S. herbaria, GUAM’s focal area of research is situated entirely within the Paleotropics, e.g., with lateritic soils and uplifted limestone habitats. The remote, insular and oceanic setting has also resulted in a herbarium that, for its size, has a high proportion of rare, endangered and newly discovered species. The herbarium also contains unique vouchers from island areas that have been devastated by volcanic eruptions. GUAM provides the nearest reference collection and taxonomic expertise for most Micronesian-based governments, conservationists and resource managers.

The purpose of the present report is to illustrate the way in which democracy, just as any other political system, can be modified by the traditional values of a particular society. We shall attempt to do this by comparing the effect of traditional values in two different societies upon the democratic structure which each has borrowed from the U.S. In this comparison we shall focus on one aspect of democracy, the obligation of political leaders and government officials to place the interests of the community of the nation ahead of personal gain and personal obligations and on the way that traditional values influence the fulfillment of this obligation.

The rainbow runner, Elegatus bipinnulatus, is a fast swimming pelagic predator known as te kina on these two Polynesian outliers in the Caroline Islands. The main method for catching these fish on Kapingamarangi involves the use of a thick plain rope held on the surface to encircle a school. The fish are finally captured with a net. On Nukuoro, a special one-piece rotating bait hook was used for capturing the fish. These catching methods are unusual-surface predators are generally thought to have been taken in the Pacific by trolling lure hooks. In both islands, te kina is the subject of much discussion and many chants, along with other pelagic fish. It is clearly a worthy adversary for the expert fisherman.

Archaeological evidence on these two islands, however, suggests that at least during the prehistoric period, far more of these fish were probably caught in the men's house than ever in a canoe. Of nearly 2000 fish recovered from eleven archaeological sites spanning a millennium of prehistory on the islands, less than 15% were fast swimming pelagic predators, including varieties of tuna, barracouta, and jack mackerel, together with the rainbow runner.

This paper reviews the changing character of prehistoric fish catches and likely fishing methods on Kapingamarangi and Nukuoro. A wide gap is found between fishy folk lore and economic reality.

Education of Women and Family Size in Two Micronesian Communities

Household census and village records from two communities in Truk, Micronesia, were analyzed for marital history, number of children borne, educational attainment, and current employment status for the 255 women residents aged 15-64. It was found that the proportion of women who were married in each community was lower among those with more education and among those who were either enrolled in school or currently employed outside the home. Current employment status was significantly associated with the attainment of more than an eighth grade education. Marital fertility was lower among younger women with more than an eighth grade education and among those employed in the wage economy at the time of the study. The published literature on employment, educational attainment and fertility was reviewed and compared with data obtained in this study in order to put the latter into a worldwide perspective. Differences between the two communities in attitudes toward and historical contacts with formal education were described. Small differences in the patterns of relationships among education, employment, marriage, and fertility between the two communities were discussed, although no formal comparisons between them were attempted.

Land (fãlu) is conceptualized as strand or sand (pi), interior or hard-land (nimel or chumao), and swamp-land (bwul). Sea areas include the open ocean (metau), lagoon (lam), and reef (och) (cf. Summary of recorded cetacean strandings in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands

Documented strandings in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands over the past 17 years are reviewed with recorded autopsy information provided. Most of the strandings occurred on the island of Saipan, although two whales were noted to have stranded during this period on Tinian, one identified as Balaenoptera edeni, the Byrdes whale, while the other was not identified. The planned expansion of military activities in the Marianas Archipelago, particularly the use of sonar and the potential impact on cetaceans, is noted.

Women's fishing and women's knowledge of marine ecosystems has been given scant attention in the literature. The few studies that do exist indicate that women's fishing provides a consistent and stable form of protein for subsistence. In the early part of this century, women's net fishing on Kosrae was a highly developed and varied activity that included specialized gear and techniques. Women's fishing remains an important activity on Kosrae although only a few individuals still practice traditional fishing methods. This paper reviews past and present forms of women's fishing practices on Kosrae and examines the social and technological changes in women's fishing over the last century.

The romantic image of the Tahitian living from the fruits of the land and the sea is dated. No Tahitian lives solely on the fish he catches, the breadfruit he collects, or the taro he cultivates. In fact, some Tahitians use imported foods more than traditional foods, and all eat some imported foods. The new diet patterns result from changing modes of livelihood. As Tahitians intensify cashcrop production or take up full-time wage labor, subsistence farming and fishing declines. Any local commercial food-crop production or fishing is but slightly developed. Consequently, traditional foods may not even be sold in every region of the Society Islands, or, when available, may be more expensive than imported foods. The Tahitian consumer therefore turns to the cheaper and easier to obtain imported foods. A growing dependence on imported foods is a direct result of economic change in Tahitian life.

Recent reefs and shore lines of Guam

The Merizo Limestone has been traced around most of the shore line of Guam, ranging up to 1.8 m above sea level. Radiocarbon ages of the formation range between 2880 years and 5115 years, with an average of about 3600 years. The Merizo Limestone is a coral deposit requiring a rise of sea level of about 3 m. Subsequently Guam has been uplifted about 2m due to a combination of tectonic events and possibly postglacial rebound and elastic deformation. Deposits of sand and gravel extending up to 5.3 m at Ylig Bay resemble the Waimanalo shoreline (~120,000 years old) on Oahu, but the Guamanian deposit is only 900 years old and seems to be a storm deposit.

This is an unfinished list of animal names, including many unverified names, from dialects / languages commonly heard in Chuuk Lagoon, the Mortlock Islands, Hall Islands, Western Islands (Pattiw) and Nominweité, constituting the Eastern end of a chain of related dialects and cultures extending from Sonsorol and Tobi to Chuuk Lagoon. This list may emphasize a relatively small number of dialects; names are listed, however, from throughout the district.
Animal names are ordered phylogenetically, divided into chapters according to broad classification. Chapters on sponges, coelenterates, worms, molluscs, crustaceans, and insects and allies are divided into sections by category. Fishes are the subject of one large chapter, divided into sections by family. There are addi- tional chapters on birds, reptiles and amphibians, and mammals. Two appendices include some notes on botanical names: Appendix A covers the fungi and algae; Appendix B consists of notes on names of higher plants. This list includes extensive notes and remarks on cultural values, use, and knowledge, gleaned from many local sources. Notes are included to help identify the organisms or names, when they are not certain. An index lists all the names in an alphabetical order by local name.

Anadromy and amphidromy are different migratory/life history strategies. However, few North American ichthyologists and fisheries biologists use the term amphidromy, and usually describe amphidromous fishes as anadromous. By contrast those who study fishes of the fresh waters of tropical islands, as well as Japan, New Zealand and Australia, routinely use the term amphidromy. This difference in practice is attributed to the general lack of amphidromous fishes in continental North America.
Amphidromy is used to describe migratory fish that return from the sea to fresh waters at a juvenile stage; they do most of their feeding and growing in fresh water and eventually reproduce there. By contrast, in anadromous fishes, the return migration from the sea to fresh water is of adult fish approaching sexual maturity. Most or all feeding and growth of anadromous fishes takes place in the sea; they usually undertake little or no feeding in fresh water, though they reproduce there.

Marine biodiversity of Guam and the Marianas: overview

The objective of this volume is to document the marine biodiversity of Guam, a small island at the southern end of the Mariana island arc. Guam has the best-documented marine biota in Micronesia, and affords a glimpse at the great biodiversity of Pacific island reefs. The papers that follow strive to provide a critical inventory of the marine biota of Guam, with less comprehensive coverage of other Mariana Islands. Diatoms are the only previously studied group not included. This paper serves to introduce and overview this effort, the Marine Biodiversity Survey of Guam. The environmental setting and marine habitats of the Marianas are briefly reviewed, followed by a description of the methods and resources used for the survey. A brief overview is presented of what we know and how much remains to be learned about species richness of major taxa in the region. Of the 6172 species listed in this volume, 5640 are recorded from marine habitats in the Marianas. This represents the greatest marine diversity recorded for any area of comparable size. Nevertheless most taxa remain poorly known, and the daily discovery of new records shows that even the most intensively surveyed groups remain incompletely studied and that the actual marine diversity of these islands is much greater.

Status of the Mariana Crow Population on Rota, Mariana Islands

We conducted a survey of the endangered Mariana Crow (Corvus kubaryi) population on Rota, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, in October-November 1995 to provide current information on numbers and distribution of this species. To allow direct comparisons with a previous survey, we resurveyed transects established in 1982 using the same field methods and used identical analysis methods for both surveys. Several areas on Rota that lack suitable habitat and have few if any resident crows were excluded from our 6,315-ha study area.
Our reanalysis of 1982 survey data for our study area gave an estimated population size of 1,348 crows (95% CI = 1,136–1,564), compared to a 1995 estimate of 592 crows (95% CI = 474–720). Mean number of crows detected per sampling station decreased 57% from 1.06 ± 0.09 SE in 1982 to 0.46 ± 0.05 in 1995. The apparent 56% decrease in population size may be a result of habitat loss from development and typhoons, as well as persecution, but other factors contributing to the decline cannot be identified until more is known about the ecology and demography of the Mariana Crow population.

Two new species of stone crabs of the family Lithodidae are described from depths of 730 m, from the island of Guam, the southermost of the Mariana Islands. These crabs represent the first record of the family in the northwestern Pacific south of Japan. The crabs were collected in experimental shrimp traps along with a number of other deep-water crustaceans.

After a three year hiatus, Micronesica is back in business. As the new General Editor, I feel an explanation is due our contributors and subscribers. Dr. C.E. Birkeland, the last editor of record, relinquished his editorial responsibilities with the last volume published (Vol. 19), in 1984. The succeeding editor was not successful in his endeavors, and I was appointed General Editor in August, 1986. Since then, manuscripts needed to be sorted, reviewed, and revised an additional time. Due to the strength of the Japanese Yen versus the U.S. Dollar, we have been forced to abandon our long-standing contract with a Japanese company, and had to search and re-bid for a new printer. On behalf of Micronesica, I apologize to authors and subscribers for the delay and inconvenience. I hope everything will be back on schedule in the near future, and all will be in order before I pass on the editorial responsibilities to the next editor. I have chosen to use the actual date of issue as the date on this volume (No. 20), to avoid confusion. It should be noted that all of the manuscripts contained herein were submitted and accepted two to three years ago. I also wish to acknowledge C.E. Birkeland for his willingness to come out of a well-deserved "retirement" to assist in getting Micronesica back on track

We observed a flock of four Ashy Minivets (Pericrocotus divaricatus) on northern Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), on multiple occasions from 6 November 2015 through 9 April 2016. We saw both male and female plumages among the flock members, and mist-netted one of each sex. This is the first record for the CNMI and only the second  for Micronesia.

Editorial: Celebrating 50 years of publication

Micronesica was founded by Ben Stone to fill a need for a regional peer-reviewed journal in the natural sciences. At the time it was limited to the sciences of anthropology, botany, and zoology, but has since expanded to include agriculture as well as the occasional geology or chemistry paper. The first issue was published in September 1964 and included a diversity of papers such as “Social effects of Typhoon Ophelia (1960) on Ulithi,” a monograph on a flowering plant family, “The Cyperaceae of Micronesia,” and a description of a new species of fish from Guam. These papers remain important today, and one of my pleasures in editing Micronesica for the past twenty-five years was in knowing that the journal makes a lasting contribution to science in the region. The list of new taxa alone ensures that these volumes will be cited far into the future.
The scope of the journal has shifted over the decades: at first there was a greater diversity of anthropological papers, but when ISLA A Journal of Pacific Studies was founded, Micronesica focused on the more biological anthropology papers such as physical anthropology, vernacular names of organisms, traditional fishing methods. Subsequently, ISLA died and Micronesica once again took on a broader scope, recently publishing a series of papers on Chamorro latte archaeology and architecture (vol. 42). Micronesica also has a long track record of publishing papers from conferences.
Although primarily a peer-reviewed scientific journal, Micronesica serves not only specialists in the respective fields but also a diverse audience including resource managers, teachers, agricultural extension agents, and naturalists. Some articles are very accessible to a wide audience and others are communications to other specialists or necessarily-detailed material that is important to have in the scientific record.
Another very satisfying feature of Micronesica is that it provides a place where visiting scientists can publish the results of their expeditions to Micronesia, and thus return the knowledge to the region from which it came, while at the same time having their work accessible globally through libraries and on-line searches. Articles have come from France, Israel, and Italy as well as from all around the Pacific nations. This goal was also helped by the fact that we did not limit page length or require page charges; these were significant factors in the days of print publication, and allowed us to include monographic works such as the Monnniots’ study of tunicates (vol. 29) and several parts of the Insects of Micronesia.
As the College of Guam (founded 1952) has grown into the University of Guam, and as its mission has become more regional in both the educational goals and the research of the scientists here, the need to publish regional studies has become even more evident than in 1964. We added agriculture in the early 1990's because university scientists doing applied studies with a regional focus needed a peer-reviewed journal to publish their work.
While the 20th Century was breathing its last days, Micronesica went online with a web presence including full-text pdfs. Last year we made the commitment to an online-only, continuous publishing model, thanks in part to changes made in the publication requirements for new taxa in zoology and botany, and the existence of distributed archives that could guarantee the longevity of electronic publications. Eliminating print editions has greatly reduced costs and adminstrative time, and funding has long been an issue for the journal; but it has also meant giving up the exchange program that took our print copies to libraries in far-flung parts of the world and brought us some valuable journal subscriptions in return. Continuous publishing has greatly shortened the time from receipt of a manuscript to publication, and this is an advantage to authors.
Looking back over 25 years of editorship – half the life of the journal! – I feel very satisfied with having sustained the work that Stone started and that Lu Eldredge, Chuck Birkeland, Roy Tsuda and Bob Richmond continued before me. Thankfully, my Deans steadfastly supported my effort with release time, even when financial and sometimes clerical support from the university for the journal were hard to get. At the same time I feel a sense of relief to be able to pass the torch to new hands at last. There were times when I got far behind in processing manuscripts, but even then no one was willing to take over. I am glad that G. Curt Fiedler stepped up, and confident that he will be able to infuse new energy into the quintagenarian. Micronesica has a long and illustrious track record, and still has a vital role to fill in the Pacific Islands.
It is sobering to reflect that when I took on Micronesica in 1989, desktop computers were barely taking over from typewriters as a mechanism for writing papers, and illustrations were pen- and-ink, Letraset lettered, or photos printed in dark rooms and laboriously arranged into plates with cutters and tape. Now everything is digital and we are all our own secretaries and graphic artists. The World Wide Web (aka – the internet) also arrived – communication became lightning-fast. Meanwhile the study of biodiversity, to which Micronesica has contributed substantially in the Western Pacific, has come back into vogue, climate change has been recognized as a major aspect of anthropogenic change to terrestrial and marine environments and biodiversity, and invasive species have become a major threat especially to terrestrial biota. Micronesica is still relevant and important to the region, as scientists continue to document the changes taking place here.

Twenty-eight new records and three new species are documented for the Guam flora, extending the records and checklist published in Micronesica 43: 237–479. Of note among the new records are Pinnunavis yarrensis (Grunow) H. Okuno and Nitzschia janischii Grunow both observed alive, plus Protokeelia cholnokyi (Giffen) Round & Basson and Pogoneis bahrainii Round & Basson seen only in acid-cleaned preparations. Psammodictyon pustulatum (Voigt ex Meister) n. comb., n. stat. (Bacillariales: Bacillariaceae) differs from related species in having a pair of rounded elevations on the distal side of the sternum.  Three new species are described; only one was observed alive. Colliculoamphora gabgabensis (Eunotiales: Eunotiaceae) is smaller and more finely striated than its congeners. Lauderia excentrica (Thalassiosirales: Lauderiaceae) differs from the only other species of the genus in having a large, excentric, reniform annulus. Rhoiconeis pagoensis (Naviculales: Naviculaceae) differs from the other two known species in its stria density.

This anthropological analysis of coconut toddy shows how the production and consumption of palm wine symbolizes the transition to manhood on Ujelang Atoll. Islanders draw parallels between toddy production and processes of maturing which, along with training in processes of toddy manufacture and the unifying actions of a drinking circle, provide one avenue boys follow in their quest to be accepted as men. An historical consideration of toddy consumption links palm wine sharing to newer drinking styles and furnishes a context for understanding recent innovations in the use of alcoholic beverages.

The Polynesian algal bibliographic checklist is based on records from past references for American Samoa and Samoa (380 spp.), Cook Islands (111 spp.), Johnston Atoll (190 spp.), Line Islands (250 spp.), Niue (3 spp.), Phoenix Islands (193 spp.), Pitcairn Islands (23 spp.), Tokelau (1 sp.), Tonga (109 spp.), Wake Atoll (121 spp.) and Wallis and Futuna (191 spp.) and consists of three sections. The first section (I. Classification) provides a listing of classes, orders, and families of the 238 genera of Polynesian algae. The second section (II. Species-Reference Index) provides an alphabetized listing of the 667 named algal species under the four Phyla, i.e., Cyanobacteria (68 species), Rhodophyta (373 species), Ochrophyta (59 species) and Chlorophyta (167 species) with the applicable reference citations for each island or atoll. Brief taxonomic or nomenclatural notes are provided, when appropriate, for selected species. The third section (III. Island-Reference Index) provides a chronological listing of all published references for the respective island or atoll in each island group. The complete references for all citations in the text are provided in the Reference section.

Of turtles and trees: Nutritional analysis of tree heliotrope (Heliotropium foertherianum) leaves consumed by green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in Hawaiʻi

Fallen, senescent leaves of tree heliotrope (Heliotropium foertherianum), a ubiquitous shoreline tree from the Indian Ocean, tropical Asia, Australia, and the western and central Pacific, are a novel food item for green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in Hawaiʻi. Leaves were collected in two seasons and analyzed for proximate nutrients, including dry matter, ash, crude fat, crude protein, carbon:nitrogen (C:N) ratio, gross energy, as well as dietary fibers (ADF and NDF), lignin, and total phenol content. The senescent leaves showed a high C:N ratio, and measurable phenolic compounds, but were low in protein (x = 5.5%) and fat (x = 2.2%) based on dry weight. Gross energy averaged >4500 Kcal/kg ash-free dry weight; therefore, H. foertherianum could provide more calories than other marine food sources for Hawaiian green turtles. Green turtles elsewhere within the broad geographic range of tree heliotrope’s distribution may also consume senescent leaves that fall into coastal waters.

Abstract— We surveyed the terrestrial gastropods of Alupat Island, a small uninhabited islet located in Hagåtña Bay, Guam. In three days of examining vegetation, leaf litter, and soil, we found 13 species of molluscs representing ten genera and eight families, all previously known from the main islands of the Marianas. We did not find any members of the family Partulidae, of conservation concern across the tropical Pacific. However, neither did we encounter the invasive flatworm Platydemus manokwari De Beauchamp, which is currently eliminating native snails in the Marianas and elsewhere. Hence, we suggest that Alupat Island might serve as a sanctuary for transplanting populations of Guam's most endangered snails should a thorough survey confirm the absence of flatworms.

On November 30, 1960, Typhoon Ophelia struck Ulithi, an atoll in the southwest Pacific, leaving the island groups a mass of devastation. It was the worst tropical cyclone to strike the atoll since 1907, when a similar catastrophe laid waste the land, but Ophelia differed from this earlier typhoon in being perhaps less intense in surface wind speed and much more violent in the wave action it churned up, resulting in severe damage to nearly all beaches and inundation of the interior of Falapop Island. Moreover, over half a century of change had rendered the human circumstances different.

This paper reports on the occurrence and abundance of 48 migrant and resident bird species observed in the Palau Islands of western Micronesia from 22 April to 17 May 2005. Species accounts are presented for 41 migrants, including 23 shorebirds, eight land birds, seven egrets and herons, and three terns and gulls, and seven resident birds, including four waterbirds, two passerines, and one seabird. Noteworthy sightings include the first record of a Richard’s Pipit (Anthus richardi) in Micronesia, the first confirmed record of a Gray Heron (Ardea cinerea) in Palau, and second published records of Great Egret (Casmerodius alba), Striated Heron (Butorides striata), Black Kite (Milvus migrans), Long-toed Stint (Calidris subminuta), Whiskered Tern (Chlidonias hybrida), and Gray Wagtail (Motacilla cinerea) in Palau. Although we did not observe large numbers of any migrant, four species (Greater Sand-Plover [Charadrius leschenaultii], Common Sandpiper [Actitis hypoleucos], Sharp-tailed Sandpiper [Calidris acuminata], and Eastern Yellow Wagtail [Motacilla tschutschensis]) were recorded in greater numbers than reported at other locations in Micronesia. Among resident species, we counted a total of 69 Common Moorhens (Gallinula chloropus) at three sites, which represents by far the highest number ever recorded in the archipelago. No Pacific Black Ducks (Anas superciliosa) were sighted, confirming the rarity of this species in Palau. Two populations of introduced Eurasian Tree Sparrows (Passer montanus) totaling 62 birds were found, indicating a rapid increase in abundance since this species was first discovered in Palau in 2000.

Past studies on benthic algae of tropical reefs have focused on the descriptive aspects. In recent years, there has been an increase in interdisciplinary studies whereby researchers in various disciplines have pooled their knowledge to better interpret certain aspects of reef function. Since the benthic algae are the primary producers on the reef and knowledge on this group is basic to other studies, emphasis has focused on the role of benthic algae in the coral reef ecosystem.

The status of population history studies in the Pacific has advanced materially in recent years, culminating in such significant publications as those by McArthur (1968), Schmitt (1968), Pool (1961 et seq.), Voisin (1962), and others. Notably, comparable advances have not been forthcoming from the Micronesian area. Thus, the earlier statement by Taeuber and Han (1950) concerning the state of demographic knowledge of this region is still pertinent, while modern investigations into the historical demography of Micronesia have scarcely begun. This situation represents a serious deficiency in the development of research in the microevolution of Micronesian populations, since physical anthropology has long since accepted the critical need for understanding the population matrix of evolutionary process (Cavalli-Sforza and Bodmer, 1971; Salzano et al., 1967; inter alia).

Fifty-three species in six families occur in Micronesia. Kevan (1987) listed forty-three species, 20 of which were given as new but undescribed. Kevan (1990) listed eight species as introduced, seven of which were on his previous list, plus Mecopoda elongata (Linnaeus). Seven new species were described in the Conocephalidae, Phisidini, by Jin & Kevan (1992). Eighteen additional new species and a subspecies are described in this paper, seventeen by Vickery & Kevan and one by English & Kevan, nine in the Gryllacrididae: Niphetogryllacris marianae, N. tolensis, Anancistrogera palauensis, Neanias ogasawarensis, Prosopogryllacris palauensis, P. chuukensis, Melaneremus marianae marianae, M. m. rotaensis, M. saiensis, and M. kosraensis; two in the Rhaphidophoridae: Rhaphidophora ponapensis and Stonychophora palauensis; three in the Phaneropteridae: Casigneta palauensis, Isopsera yapanese and I. palauensis; one in the Mecopodidae: Ocica ponapensis English & Kevan; and three in the Conocephalidae: Spinisternum palauensis, Macroxiphus globiceratus and Salomona ponapensis. Nine species are added to the lists of Kevan (1987, 1990), including one described as new. Twenty-six species are known to be endemic in Micronesia.

This paper focuses on the contact population of Kosrae, the easternmost island of the Caroline chain. The historical material concerning Kosrae is sufficient to allow a fairly careful evaluation of the contact population estimates. The most important source of information consists of the explorer Lütke's attempt to enumerate the adults of the various districts of the island. By determining and correcting for the likely errors in his count, it is possible to derive a range within which the contact population must have fallen. The results suggest that most estimates of the Kosraen population at contact tended to be low rather than high, and it appears that there was considerable depopulation in the thirty years between contact and the first missionary censuses. Nevertheless, Kosrae was sparsely populated in comparison to other similarly sized islands. This situation is partially explained by evidence that there was considerable depopulation shortly before European contact. This case illustrates that one cannot assume that any specific precontact Pacific population was characterized by either population equilibrium or a tendency toward an optimum size.
