Cetacean records for the New Caledonian area (Southwest Pacific Ocean)

We report the results of opportunistic sightings collected over a 9–year period. These observations add 9 species to the previously known species from New Caledonia, bringing the total number of cetaceans identified in this area to 13. They are: Minke whale, Balaenoptera acutorostrata (Lacépède, 1804); Sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus (Linnaeus, 1758); Short-finned pilot whale, Globicephala macrorhynchus (Gray, 1846); Killer whale, Orcinus orca (Linnaeus, 1758); Bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops truncatus (Montagu, 1821); Spinner dolphin, Stenella longirostris (Gray, 1828); Spotted dolphin, Stenella attenuata (Gray, 1846); Risso’s dolphin, Grampus griseus (Cuvier, 1812); and Blainville’s beaked whale, Mesoplodon densirostris (de Blainville, 1817).

The sixth genus of corallimorph arian family Actinodiscidae, Amplexidiscus n. gen., is described. It is distinguished by its numerous short, simple, conic al tentacles, and few marginal tentacles. The type species, and currently the only one known for the genus, A. fenestrafer, may attain the largest size of any known corallimorpharian (up to 450 mm oral disc diameter). It has been found in relatively shallow waters on the lagoon side of coral reefs on the Great Barrier Reef, in eastern Indonesia, Palau and Guam .

Ethnic Institutions and Identity: Palauan Migrants on Guam

There are over one thousand Palauan migrants residing on Guam. They have been able to adapt to life on Guam relatively successfully while continuing to view themselves as Palauans and retaining close ties with Palau. The primary mechanisms in the maintenance of their identity are the Palauan institutions. Similar in many respects to those found in Palau, the migrant institutions have their base in the kinship units, telungalek/kebliil, but vary from the original as accommodation to life on Guam has demanded. These institutions give the migrants a context in which Palauan language and role relationships can be experienced and channels of reciprocity with Palau and among the migrants maintained. They also make adjustment to life on Guam easier by providing a source of financial, social, emotional, and spiritual support to the migrant.

Coconut crabs (Birgus latro) were removed from an area and relocated as a form of mitigation to off set land clearing activities. It was found that a 3.3 ha area could be cleared of crabs in a four night period using standard crab hunting techniques and that the area stayed clear for 15-20 days but was fully repopulated within a three month period. Density calculations estimated a population of 16 crabs/ha in secondary forest habitat. Morphometric data and CPUE rates showed that Saipan’s coconut crabs are small in size and consistent with a severely overhar- vested resource.

The present paper describes a new species Patinapta taiwaniensis, collected from Tiausue, southern Taiwan. This new species is characterised particularly by the form of the anchor plates which have a well-developed hole each side at the posterior end and few additional posterior holes. It appears most closely related to P. dumasi Cherbonnier. The relationship of P. taiwaniensis with each of the 5 known species within the genus Patinapta is discussed.

A new species of pontoniine shrimp, Periclimenes kororensis, from Koror, Western Caroline Islands, is described. The single example, an ovigerous female lacking both second pereiopods, was found in association with a scleractinian host, Heliofungia actiniformis. The species appears to be an aberrant member of the "P. grandis species-group", and not closely related to any previously described species.

Atolls – the “biodiversity cool spots” vs hot spots: a critical new focus for research and conservation

This paper highlights the seriousness of the “biodiversity crisis” on atolls and the need to place greater research and conservation emphasis on atolls and other small island ecosystems. It presents a “snapshot” of the current status of atoll biodiversity, including associated marine biodiversity, and stresses that atolls are “biodiversity cool spots”, which, apart from, in some cases, very considerable marine resources, have among the poorest and most highly threatened biodiversity inheritances on Earth. Atoll societies and ecosystems are also widely believed to be the most seriously threatened by global climate change and associated sea level rise. This paper is based on studies over the past twenty years conducted in the atolls of Tuvalu, Tokelau, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands and the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia. It stresses that atolls offer some of the greatest opportunities for integrated studies of simplified small-island ecosystems, especially studies that involve local communities and local researchers, as have been emphasized by the Pacific Asia Biodiversity Transect Network (PABITRA). It is suggested that, if we are really worried mutual capacity building and sustainability of islands as human support systems, we must place higher priority on research on, and the conservation of, the Earth’s “cool spots”, such as the atolls and other biodiversity-poor small islands. Emphasis is also placed on the importance of the protection, recording and application of indigenous knowledge, here referred to as “ethnobiodiversity”, which when used in concert with the most up-to-date modern scientific knowledge, constitutes perhaps the most appropriate means of designing models for the sustainable use of small island ecosystems.

Fifteen species of reptiles, 18 birds, and five mammals are recorded from Pakin Atoll. None is endemic to Pakin and all of the residents tend to be widely distributed throughout Micronesia. Introduced species include four mammals (Rattus exulans, Canis familiaris, Felis catus, Sus scrofa), the Red Junglefowl (Gallus gallus) among birds, and at least one lizard (Varanus indicus). Of the 17 indigenous birds, ten are presumed or documented breeding residents, including four land birds, a heron, and five terns. The Micronesian Honeyeater (Myzomela rubratra) is the most common land bird, followed closely by the Micronesian Starling (Aplonis opaca). The vegetation is mainly Cocos forest, considerably modified by periodic cutting of the undergrowth, deliberately set fires, and the rooting of pigs. Most of the present vertebrate species do not appear to be seriously endangered by present levels of human activity. But the Micronesian Pigeon (Ducula oceanica) is less numerous on the settled islands, probably reflecting increased hunting pressure, and sea turtles (especially Chelonia mydas) and their eggs are harvested indiscriminately .

A revision of Ceramium from Fiji and Samoa is provided, following an evaluation of previously published records, study of type specimens and voucher collections, and on the basis of field and laboratory investigations. Eight extant species are recognized [Ceramium affine Setchell and Gardner, C. codii (Richards) Mazoyer, C. punctiforme Setchell, C. flaccidum (Harvey ex Kützing) Ardissone, C. macilentum J. Agardh, Ceramium sp. aff. Ceramium marshallense Dawson, C. subdichotomum Weber-van Bosse and C. vagans P. Silva], and 3 that are new [Ceramium krameri, C. rintelsianum and C. upolense]. The occurrence or status of four previously reported species [Ceramium camouii Dawson, C. clarionensis Setchell & Gardner, C. subverticillatum (Grunow) Weber-van Bosse and C. zacae Setchell & Gardner] could not be confirmed, while a number of other previously reported species are placed in synonymy. The most abundant species is Ceramium flaccidum. Keys and illustrations for all species are included, and the taxonomy and nomenclature of the Fijian and Samoan species are discussed. All of the species are microscopic, mostly less than 5.0 mm tall, and most occur as epiphytes on corals or larger algae. One species (C. punctiforme) is restricted to the surfaces of the crustose coralline Hydrolithon on the exposed reef crest.

Composition of a Limestone Forest Community on Guam

The vegetation of a limestone forest community was characterized at Pagat, a region on the windward northeastern coast of Guam. Because of the prevailing easterlies this part of the island receives the most rain, and the vegetation varies considerably from that of the leeward side. Thirtyeight species of seed plants were found on a transect 750 meters long, which extended from the plateau (120 m elevation) to the salt spray zone. Information on density, frequency, and percent cover was obtained for each species in 150 quadrats (2x5 m). A list of plants and their relative abundance are given for the lower terrace which was not included in the transect. The relationship between the amount of salt deposition and density of Pemphis acidula in the salt spray zone is also discussed.

From May 28 to June 5, 2004, sixty-three 400-m2 stations were surveyed throughout the five municipality lagoon waters of Pohnpei Island to evaluate the densities and distribution of potential commercial holothurians. Thirty-eight per cent of the stations were concentrated on the barrier-reef crest, 36.5%, on the back barrier reef platform, and 25.5% within the patch reefs/seaward portion of the fringing reef flat complex. A total of 12,806 individuals represented by six species were registered, equivalent to a mean density of 0.51 ind.m–2. Holothuria atra composed 87.1% of the total number, followed by Stichopus chloronotus, with 5.0%, Actinopyga mauritiana, 4.5%, Holothuria edulis, 2.9%, Bohadschia sp., 0.4%, and Holothuria whitmaei, 0.1%, respectively. By municipalities, all species confound, Uh recorded the highest densities with 0.83 ind.m–2, the lowest being Sokehs with 0.18 ind.m–2. By physiographic zone, a contagious distribution is observed, H. edulis being concentrated within the fringing/patch reef complex, while A. mauritiana occurs mainly on the barrier-reef crest, most frequently at Nett, constituting 25.6% of the 1,958 individuals surveyed there. S. chloronotus and H. atra have representatives in all three defined physiographic zones. The estimated standing crops are 15,000 mt for H. atra, a little over 900 mt for H. edulis, 339 mt and 244 mt, respectively, for S. chloronotus and A. mauritiana. Comparison between annual harvest potential, market prices and mean exploitable age permits one to estimate the gross revenue of a given species. Due to forecasted high annual harvest volumes, H. atra offers the best commercial potential. S. chloronotus and A. mauritiana, are commercially attractive mainly because of their relatively high commercial value. Management strategies are suggested and should be adopted before any commercial holothurian fishery is implemented.

For more than a century visitors to the island of Ponape in the Eastern Carolines have engaged in mystified speculation about the megalithic ruins of Nan Matol (also spelled Nan Matal, etc.) on the east coast of the island. The writings of the German ethnographer Paul Hambruch constitute the fullest and most authoritative discussion of the ruins to date. Hambruch did ethnographic fieldwork on Ponape in 1910, and spent part of his time surveying and investigating the ruins as well. In his reports he also reviews much of the early literature on them as well as presenting his own findings (1911, 1936).

Pacific islands of two principal types offer somewhat contrasting environments. The high island offers an environment of high annual rainfall (often in excess of 200 inches), moderate temperatures, and lush vegetation. The atoll is somewhat drier (usually less than 150 inches) and warmer (80°F. or higher average temperature), the more xeric conditions resulting in somewhat lower bioproductivity. (While my comments relate to experience in Micronesia and more specifically in the Marshalls and eastern Carolines, the parameters considered here relate to other areas of the Pacific as well.)

The Endemic Plants of Micronesia: A Geographical Checklist and Commentary

The Micronesia-Polynesia bioregion is recognized as a global biodiversity hotspot. However, until now estimates regarding the number of endemic plant species for the region were not supported by any compre- hensive published work for the region. The results of this study indicate that Micronesia has the world’s highest percentage of plant endemism per square kilometer out of all globally recognized insular biodiversity hot- spots. A checklist of all endemic plant species for Micronesia is presented here with their corresponding geographical limits within the region. A summary of previous work and estimates is also provided noting the degree of taxonomic progress in the past several decades. A total of 364 vascular plant species are considered endemic to Micronesia, most of them being restricted to the Caroline Islands with a large percentage restricted to Palau. The checklist includes seven new combinations, one new name, and two unverified names that require additional study to verify endemic status. Overviews of each respective botanical family represented in the list are given including additional information on the Micronesian taxa. Recommendations for future work and potential projects are alluded to throughout the text highlighting major data gaps and very poorly known taxa. The Genus Loheria Merrill (Myrsinaceae)

Loheria Merrill (Myrsinaceae) is revised; six species are included, of which one is new (L. jubilaria) and one is a new combination (L. crassifolia, transferred from Amblyanthopsis). The genus occurs only in the Philippine Islands (four species) and New Guinea (two species). Within the family Myrsinaceae, Loheria has close relationships to Fittingia Mez, Tapeinosperma Hook.f, and Discocalyx Mez, in particular to the first of these. The genus is characterized by its dioecious often tetramerous or pentamerous but sometimes trimerous flowers, the few (usually 5-3) uniseriate ovules, the distinctly elongated filaments, the short ovate eglandular anthers, the discoid-capitate stigma on a well-developed style, the specialized lateral short shoots bearing few strongly reduced or no leaves and an involucre of crowded bracts below the panicles, and the erect, un- or few-branched "schöpfbaum" habit with large, mostly obovate, distally crowded leaves.

Native place- names and geographic systems of Fais, Caroline Islands

This paper presents three geographic systems from Fais, an isolated, raised coral island in the Yap District of Micronesia. One is a system of bounded, named parcels of land which entirely map the island area. The second is a system of offshore mapping, by intersecting radial and concentric axes. This third is a series of known coral heads and fishing sites. These three systems operate interdependently to accurately specify land and marine locations. Two maps illustrate these systems; a Glossary gives 320 native place-names and their meanings.

The plate arrangement of Podosphaeraster includes a dorsal apical system comprising a centrodorsal plate and abutting interradial and radial plates. Marginal plates are not recognisable. Podosphaeraster differs from Sphaeraster mainly by a reduction in plate number. from over 100 to 10 ventrally and from 38 to 10-12 dorsally. The digestive system of Podosphaeraster is highly specialised. The cardiac stomach is very reduced, there is no well-defined pyloric complex and there are no true rectal caeca, but a rectal canal from the pyloric floor to the anus. Histologically the digestive system is similar to other asteroids. Podosphaeraster is known from the North Atlantic and the western Pacific regions. Sphaeraster is known from Jurassic beds in southern Germany, France and Spain.

Turtle nesting activity for 1995 occurred between 31 January and 16 July. A minimum of 24 nests were laid, with additional nesting activity that could represent as many as 24 nests. Six green turtles (Chelonia mydas), were tagged between 1 April and 23 May 1995. Two to four additional turtles were believed to have been nesting, but were not encountered. Mean curved carapace length for tagged turtles was 104.5 ± 2.5cm, and mean width was 94.2 ± 3.5 cm. Although turtles were encountered on different beaches, individual tagged turtles were encountered on the same beach every time. Mean incubation period was 62 ± 5 days. Mean clutch size was 91 ± 10 eggs, with a mean hatch success of 89 percent for successful nests. Percentage of successful nests was not calculated as nests were evacuated on an opportunistic basis. During ten aquatic surveys conducted during the nesting season, all 36 turtles observed were green turtles and 92 percent were subadults. Data from this study combined with anecdotal historical information reveal that virtually all of Tinian’s beaches are used by turtles for nesting.

Recent collections of specimens of Halophila gaudichaudii J. Kuo, previously identified as Halophila minor (Zollinger) den Hartog, from Kwajalein Atoll in September 2016 and the archiving of the specimens at BISH validate the previous observation of this seagrass genus in the Marshall Islands. Previously, no voucher specimen was available for examination. Molecular analyses of the Kwajalein Halophila specimens may demonstrate conspecificity with Halophila nipponica J. Kuo with H. gaudichaudii relegated as a synonym. Herbarium specimens of Cymodocea rotundata Ehrenberg and Hemprich ex Ascherson from Majuro Atoll were found at BISH and may represent the only specimens from the Marshall Islands archived in a herbarium. Cymodocea rotundata, however, has been documented in past literature and archived via digital photos in its natural habitat in Majuro. The previous validation of Thalassia hemprichii (Ehrenberg) Ascherson with specimens, and the recent validation of Halophila gaudichaudii and Cymodocea rotundata with specimens reaffirm the low coral atolls and islands of the Marshall Islands as the eastern limit for the three species in the Pacific Ocean.

Migrations and Conservation Implications of Post-Nesting Green Turtles from Gielop Island, Ulithi Atoll, Federated States of Micronesia

Post-nesting migrations of thirteen green turtles tagged at Gielop Island, Ulithi, Yap State, Federated States of Micronesia, were tracked by satellite transmitters in 2005-2007. Eight of the turtles traveled west to the Philippines with an average distance of 2600 km. One turtle migrated nearly 6000 km through Philippines and Vietnamese waters to Malaysia, and three migrated north to Japan. Consistent site transmissions exceeding 30 days suggest turtles had reached their feeding destinations. Results of satellite tracking data indicate substantial green turtle resource connectivity between Gielop Island nesting areas and Philippine and Japan feeding habitats, in support of previous flipper tag recoveries. Satellite telemetry offers the advantage of real time monitoring of turtle movements and migration, enhancing opportunities for public education and international cooperation in resource conservation and management.

Ocean pathways and residential foraging locations for satellite tracked green turtles breeding at French Frigate Shoals in the Hawaiian Islands

From 1992-2014 the breeding migrations of 20 green turtles, Chelonia mydas, were satellite tracked either from or to the colonial nesting site of French Frigate Shoals (FFS), a geologically ancient mid-point in the 2400 km arc of the Hawaiian Islands. Using the Argos System, ocean routes and travel schedules were mapped and the home ranges of foraging area destinations were calculated and portrayed by Minimum Convex Polygons. None of the turtles migrated outside the Central North Pacific (CNP) region of Hawai‘i. Fifteen of the 17 turtles tracked from FFS migrated to the Main Hawaiian Islands (MHI) to the southeast, while one turtle went directly south to the foraging site of Johnston Atoll within the CNP, and another ceased transmitting midway between FFS and the MHI. Transit times from FFS to the MHI ranged from 16-94 days. Distances covered during each migration ranged from 830-3936 km with travel rates of 1.2-2.5 km/hr. Upon arrival at residential locations transmissions continued for 2-314 days. The post-breeding pathways taken by the turtles comprised two general corridors. Thirteen of the turtles traveled well offshore south of the island chain. In contrast, two turtles traveled a more direct pathway over the banks and reefs of the Hawaiian Islands chain. After arriving in the MHI, all but one traveled coastally until crossing the deep channels separating each island. Nine widely separated home range foraging destinations were identified. Two of the largest bays in the Hawaiian Islands, Kane‘ohe Bay on O‘ahu and Kahului Bay on Maui, were the destinations for ~50% of the turtles, thereby emphasizing the conservation importance of these two locations for adults in the Hawaiian green turtle population. Our study brings together for the first time Hawaiian green turtle tracking data collected over the span of 22 years.

We recorded observations of a Narcissus Flycatcher (Ficedula narcissina) and a Chestnut-winged Cuckoo (Clamator coromandus) on Guam, the southernmost and largest of the Mariana Islands. The flycatcher was seen once, on 23 October 2017, while the cuckoo was observed on seven occasions from 5 to 28 December 2017. Both species were found at night, during Brown Treesnake (Boiga irregularis) searches in the northern part of the island. These are the first records of the species for Guam and the Mariana Islands.

The grey reef shark, Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos, is a coastal-pelagic schooling shark often associated with deeper areas near coral reefs, atoll passes and lagoons with strong tidal flow. Currently listed as “near threatened” by the UCIN, grey reef sharks, as with many other shark species, are considered to be in rapid decline. Here I report observations of high-density aggregations of young grey reef sharks at a small and relatively shallow continental seamount South-West of the Marianas island of Guam. Juvenile grey reef sharks were found to be 9.3 and 5.6 times higher in abundance on the observed sea mount compared to the surrounding seamounts over successive years. Grey reef shark pupping grounds have not previously been reported in the Marianas archipelago potentially identifying this locality as a rare suitable habitat for grey sharks to reproduce. A discussion of the physical characteristics of the sea-mount and a comparison between these observations and the established criteria for shark nurseries is presented.

Marine Benthic Algae from Seamounts along the Mariana Islands, Western Pacific

The marine benthic algae from six seamounts, i.e., isolated submerged reefs, banks and shoals, along the Mariana Islands were identified and recorded based on SCUBA collections obtained during the August˗September 2003 and the September 2005 cruises by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The algae represented the first collections obtained from Supply Reef, Zealandia Bank and Tatsumi Reef within the Mariana Arc and from Stingray Shoal, Pathfinder Reef, and Arakane Reef within the West Mariana Ridge. A total of 67 species were documented, i.e., 8 species of blue-green algae, 30 species of red algae, 5 species of brown algae, and 24 species of green algae. Thirty-one algal species were collected only from seamounts within the West Mariana Ridge, and 5 algal species were collected only from seamounts (including Santa Rosa Reef reported previously) within the Mariana Arc. The remaining 31 algal species were recorded from seamounts along both the West Mariana Ridge and Mariana Arc. Aside from 5 taxa identified only to genus, 4 species of red algae (Antithamnion decipiens, Ceramium isogonum, Chondria bullata and Gayliella transversalis) were new records for Micronesia (including Mariana Islands). Ten additional species of red algae (Caulacanthus ustulatus, Ceramium affine, Ceramium codii, Chondria simpliciuscula, Dasya cf. corymbifera, Jania pumila, Jania rubens, Lomentaria hakodatensis, Polysiphonia dotyi and Polysiphonia sertularioides) were new records for the Mariana Islands.

Some Like it Hot: Heat Tolerance of the Crab-Eating Frog, Fejervarya cancrivora

We used Critical Thermal Methodology to quantify thermal tolerance of the crab-eating frog, Fejervarya cancrivora, from Hoga Island, southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. The critical thermal maximum of F. cancrivora was 42.1 ± 0.76 C, and is perhaps the highest thermal tolerance value known in an anuran acclimatized to 25 C. The frogs’ ability to tolerate extreme high temperatures allows them to exploit abiotically harsh mangal habitats and accounts for their wide distribution across the tropical Pacific.
