Sixteenth-Century European sailors briefly visiting the island of Guam noted the availability of tropical plant foods they recognized or thought similar to those from the Old and New Worlds such as coconuts, sweet potatoes, bananas, rice, and sugarcane, plus edible plants with which they had less familiarity such as breadfruit, yams, and taro. Almost a century later, early clergy in the Mariana Islands recorded Chamorro inhabitants actively cultivating a range of domestic plants in a number of settings, while also collecting indigenous flora in the tropical forest. Today archaeologists in the region routinely record material evidence of processing, preparation, and consumption of these plant foods in prehistoric habitation sites, although corroboration of indigenous agriculture in the non-habitation landscape remains elusive. This study presents an analysis of organic, chemical, and textural constituents of soils derived from systematic sampling of two probable latte period agricultural sites situated in northern Guam, and a comparison of these data with specific plants that may have been cultivated there and their traditional farming techniques. Far from being a definitive exposé on the subject, these approaches and their interpretation are in their infancy and can benefit from replication, innovation, and suggestion across the island group.

In this particular contribution emphasis is placed upon two factors which are of material importance in consideration of any island ecosystem, though it is true they have even wider implications. Islands, however, are relatively small areas of land and interference or alternation of the ecosystem therefore tends to be more pronounced in its effect. The conservation of maritime vegetation concerns both low and high islands, whereas the arrival of exotic freshwater plants requires the existence of freshwater lakes which are primarily restricted to high islands . Although this symposium is essentially directed at the smaller islands of the Pacific, nevertheless it is felt that what is happening in the New Zealand Islands has important lessons.

The quantification of surface area has proven to be a useful approach to the greater understanding of surface-mediated processes in complex ecosystems such as coral reefs (Dahl, 1973). For plants in particular, it is through surfaces that light is absorbed for photosynthesis and materials exchanged with the surrounding medium, whether gaseous or aquatic. Attachment also requires surface, and in highly productive and mature benthic ecosystems, the generation of substratum is an evolutionary strategy permitting an increase in organism density and diversity.

In this paper are presented critical notes and records of species of Peperomia (Piperaceae), Ascarina (Chloranthaceae), Weinmannia (Cunoniaceae), Ardisia (Myrsinaceae), Alstonia, Ochrosia, and Neiosperma (Apocynaceae), and Operculina (Convolvulaceae), from various islands in the Marquesas, Society, and Cook Archipelagoes. The following taxa are described as new: Weinmannia parviflora var. myrsinites; Alstonia marquisensis M. L. Grant; Ochrosia nukuhivensis and O. fatuhivensis; and Neiosperma brownii. Two new combinations are made under Weinmannia parviflora: var. marquesana (F. Br.); and var. glabrata (F. Br.).

The web of each individual was a three dimensional labyrinth of threads supporting a central dome (a horizontal orbweb with hub stretched upward); the spider hung inverted beneath the hub; a chain of one to four eggsacs was suspended above the hub. Web, spider orientation and position of eggsacs resembled that of Cyrtophora citricola, but the orbweb lacked tangle threads connecting from below and formed a dome without the edges flared upward. Five eggsacs contained from 1100 to 1850 eggs or young. Spiderlings migrated together to the edge of the labyrinth where they rested in "nursery webs". From 1 to 12 Cyrtophora occupied individual domes in 11 webs selected to be about 1 m3 Adult females built adjacent webs forming composite masses of tangle webbing (often several meters across) occupied by smaller C. moluccensis, two Argyrodes spp., Tetragnatha sp., Leucauge sp., Gea or Argiope sp. and an unidentified araneid. Excluding new spiderlings, the total number of specimens per web was 7 to 26. The number of species per web was two to five. An Argyrodes and an clubionid was seen feeding upon Cyrtophora.

Behavioral and morphological observations on native Hawaiian freshwater fishes (Gobiodei), Eleotris sandwicensis, Stenogobius hawaiiensis, Awaous guamensis, Lentipes concolor, and Sicyopterus stimpsoni show the following diel recruitment patterns: L. concolor invaded streams mainly during the day with the wave surge; S.stimpsoni entered mostly during the day regardless of tidal conditions; A. guamensis were transported onshore day or night; S.hawaiiensis and E. sandwicensis entered streams by passive transport, the former by day, the latter at night.
E. sandwicensis and S.hawaiiensis larvae mature in the lowerstream reaches while L.concolor, S.stimpsoni, and A. guamensis usually move to upstream habitats. For these latter three fishes, onto genetic changes in behavior, including predator avoidance during recruitment and aggressive interactions between immature fishes farther upstream,act in sequence to produce the instream distribution typical of adults.
Schooling occurred in the estuary in S.stimpsoni and A. guamensis postlarvae; singles and pairs also migrated into streams. Postlarvae remained in schools through the estuary where they were vulnerable to predation by adult E. sandwicensis and Kuhlia sandvicensis. After climbing a waterfall that excluded most aquatic predators, A. guamensis and S. stimpsoni developed coloration displayed during aggressive contests. Immature S. stimpsoni that failed to develop bright colors lost agonistic encounters and usually fled upstream. Aggressive displays by postlarval A. guamensis usually displaced intruders. L.concolor moved quickly up-stream; they did not school but exhibited agonistic behavior toward con-specifics which promoted upstream dispersal.

An estimated 169 individual Chelonia mydas were observed via 238 sightings over 28 marine surveys covering roughly 54% of Saipan’s outer reef and shoreline perimeter. No other sea turtle species were sighted. Sixty percent of the turtles were classified as juveniles, 22% as juvenile/adults, and 12% appeared to be of adult size. A disproportionate number of turtles (60%) were located along relatively uninhabited east coast sites where access to humans is limited but topographically complex benthos and a variety of food resources is apparent. Two species of seagrass and at least 29 species of algae noted as green turtle forage in other regions of the world were identified at Saipan in this and previous surveys. Turtle nesting activity was limited, with 15 crawls and 6 nests recorded throughout the 1999 nesting season.

Ecology and Distribution of the Shallow-Water Crinoids of Palau and Guam

Scuba diving investigations in the Palau Islands and Guam, plus previous records, have revealed a total of 21 species of comatulid (unstalked) crinoids in Palau and 7 species in Guain occurring at depths to 40-50 m. An additional comatulid species is recorded from 180-300 m in Palau and a stalked crinoid is recorded from 360 m in Guam. All are new records except for six species previously known from Palau. Of the 17 shallow-water species for which feeding habit s are known, 11 species form filtration feeding fans, while 6 species are totally or partially nocturnal. The distribution of crinoids in the Palauan archipelago shows the highest concentrations of species and individuals to be located within the fringing barrier reef, particularly in tidal passes and at other sites where currents prevail. A key based on color in life and living habits is presented for the shallow-water crinoids of Palau and Guam.

This paper provides 70 species accounts documenting new bird records we obtained in the 14 Mariana Islands north of Guam (Fig. 1) from the winter of 1978 through Dec. 1988. The accounts are comprised of 224 sight, 3 photographic, and 32 specimen records. These represent 118 new island records, 23 which are new to the Marianas group, 10 new to Micronesia, and 5 new to the tropical Pacific (Table 1). Records are new for a particular island only, unless a larger geographical area is mentioned for a specific record in the text.

All zoeal stages and the megalopa of Sesarma (P.) erythrodactyla Hess, and the first zoeal stages of Sesarma (B.) smithii H. Milne-Edwards and Sesarma (P.) messa Campbell, are described and figured from eastern Australian specimens. Larvae of 16 Sesarma (s.l.) species are now known. Features of 10 of these were summarised by Wilson (1980), corresponding features for the other 6 are presented here. Differences between first zoeae of S. erythrodactyla from Australian and Japanese descriptions are noted, including the presence of fine setules on the telson rami of Australian specimens, and support is given to the suggestion of evolutionary separation between the two stocks. Features previously used in distinguishing between larvae of lndo-West Pacific species of Sesarma are revised.

Artificial keys to the genera of blue-green, red, brown, and green marine benthic algae of Micronesia are given, including virtually all the genera reported from Palau, Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, Federated States of Micronesia and the Marshall Islands. Twenty-two new species or genera are reported here for Guam and 7 for Yap; 11 of these are also new for Micronesia. Note is made of several recent published records for Guam and 2 species recently raised from varietal status. Finally, a list is given of nomenclatural changes that affect the 2003 revised checklist (Micronesica 35-36: 54–99). Several sampling methods were used to survey for potential pollinators of the critically endangered Cycas micronesica in different forest communities on the islands of Guam and Rota. The most common insects found depended on the method. From direct observations, Anatrachyntis sp. (Lepidoptera: Cosmopterygidae) larvae and adults were observed only on male cones. Adult Carpophilus sp. beetles (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) were common on male cones and were occasionally observed on female cones. In bag traps over cones, adult Anatrachyntis were consistently trapped and were very abundant on both sexes, and other insects were rarely observed. Sticky collars around cones captured the highest diversity of taxa, mostly Diptera, Hymenoptera and Coleoptera comprising several families within each order, as well as Anatrachyntis adults. Two species within the family Phoridae were the most common Diptera and ants were the most common Hymenoptera. The most common Coleoptera were Staphylinidae and Nitidulidae. Similar taxa were trapped on both sexes and from four different habitats on Guam. On female cone sticky traps, ~30% of the pollen grains were associated with Anatrachyntis moths or moth scales and less than 5% with other insects; however, over 60% of the pollen was not associated with any insect, suggesting some pollen is wind dispersed. On Rota, 60 km northwest of Guam, Anatrachyntis moths and Carpophilus beetles were found on cones. In sum, the results suggest both wind and insects as pollen vectors, with Anatrachyntis moths the most likely insect vector and, secondarily, nitidulid beetles. To date, no other Lepidoptera has been implicated as a pollinator of any cycad species.

The Line Islands, or as they are also called, the Pacific Equatorial Islands, consist of a few small remote atolls with Kingman Reef, Palmyra, Washington, Fanning, and Christmas Islands fairly close together near the 160th meridian (160° W. Long.) and from about 8° North of the Equator to 2° North; slightly south and west is Jarvis, near the intersection of the 160th meridian and the Equator; while south and east lie a few isolated atolls, Malden, Starbuck, Caroline, Vostok, and Flint, the last about 12° South of the Equator near the 150th meridian. The vegetation of these islands is for the most part quite sparse; reports have been published by Christophersen (1927) and various other workers (see Christophersen for a bibliography). Pandanus occurs on several of these islands, and is abundant on some of them; on others, it appears to be absent. The present paper is concerned with three of these islands: Palmyra, Washington, and Christmas.

Three new species of intertidal porcellanid crabs are described from the Mariana Islands. These are Petrolisthes mesodactylon, P. miyakei, and P. borradailei. The last species was formerly recognized as a variety of P. lamarckii but is now described as a valid species. A diagnosis of each of the other species considered as varieties of P. lamarckii by Borradaile ( 1898) is provided.

According to local legend, the "Blood of Sanvitores" occurs every spring as red water in Tumon Bay (Guam) in remembrance of the execution of Padre Diego Luis de Sanvitores on 2 April 1672. Red waters are described in accounts from every century since then. Since 1985, red tides have occurred within days of the anniversary of his death, as well as in the months of January, March, June, July, August, and November. Usually, unialgal blooms (>108 cells ml-1) of Scrippsiella, Peridinium, or Gymnodinium spp. occur for about two weeks, but a recent sample contained species of both Scrippsiella and Peridinium. The algae do not appear to adversely affect fish. Strong, noxious odors are uncommon, but can occur downwind of high-density bloom waters during calm weather. Flood tides that occur at sunrise transport bloom waters back towards the northeastern corner of the bay. Here they are maintained in an area of poor circulation that is enriched with N, P, and Fe from aquifer waters that seep from numerous inter- and sub-tidal springs. The bloom circulates within the bay until ebb waters begin to occur soon after sunrise which is when the organisms migrate upwards from sediments. Then, ebb waters can export the bloom either out of the bay or sufficiently far from the nutrient sources so as to increase doubling to times longer than those of water exchange.

Taxonomic data as well as information on the biology of four species of deep water snappers, genus Pristipomoides, are presented. The genus is represented in Guam by the following species, P. auricilla (Jordan, Evermann, and Tanaka), P. sieboldii (Bleeker), P. filamentosus (Cuvier and Valenciennes), and P. flavipinnis Shinohara.

Close affinities are found between P. auricilla and P. sieboldii and between P. filamentosus and P. flavipinnis. Sexual dichromatism of P. auricilla and P. filamentosus is described. P. sieboldii and P. flavipinnis displayed no sexual dichromatism.

Limited information on the feeding habits of these snappers indicates that pelagic tunicates are important food items.

Differences in number between the males and females taken of P. auricilla and P. filamentosus were significant, but P. sieboldii and P. flavipinnis showed no such differences.

The labrid genus Cirrhilabrus is represented by seven species at islands in the northwestern Pacific which include southern Japan, Taiwan, and the Marianas. Five are named species: cyanopleura, exquisitus, lanceolatus, lunatus, melanomarginatus, and temminckii. Two are described as new: katherinae from the Izu and Mariana Islands is characterized by 5 median predorsal scales, 21-23 lateral-line scales, 15-18 gill rakers, body depth 3.4-3.7 in SL, rounded to slightly rhomboid caudal fin, long pelvic fins in the male, small size (largest, 71 mm SL), and a color pattern of red dorsally, abruptly white ventrally, with a middle black band in the dorsal and anal fins and a broad red band distal to it; and rubrimarginatus which ranges in the western Pacific from Okinawa south to Fiji and Tonga; it has 5 median predorsal scales, 21-25 lateral-line scales, 17-20 gill rakers, body depth 2.85-3.1 in SL, rounded caudal fin, long pelvic fins in the male, large size (largest, 121.5 mm SL), and a color pattern for which the most distinctive feature is a broad red band in outer part of the dorsal and caudal fins.

Some 400 fish names are included in the Satawalese fish nomenclature system. Satawal occupies an intermediate position in terms of the geographical, linguistic, and cultural realm of the Caroline Islands group. Despite the absence of an extensive lagoon and reefs, navigational technologies and skills have allowed the islanders to exploit the marine resources of reefs and uninhabited atolls in adjacent as well as remote seas. Folk taxa on fish cover not only a relatively wide range of fish domains, but also reveal certain unique perceptions on fish related to food and magic. This results basically from a heavy dependence on marine resources in the coral habitat. The broad trend of Satawalese nomenclature shows influences both from the eastern and the western cognates of the Trukic language.

The spider, Argiope appensa, is one of the most abundant and widely distributed species in the Marianas archipelago. Spiders of the genus Argiope build conspicuous silk decorations which have been hypothesized to function as visual signals that attract prey, deter predators, or warn oncoming birds of the web’s presence to prevent inadvertent damage. Here, we set out to test the hypothesis that spiders will build smaller webs and larger, more complex web decorations in response to the presence of birds. The neighboring islands of Guam and Rota in the Mariana archipelago represent a unique situation to test this hypothesis in a large-scale natural setting. Guam has lost majority of its native avian fauna in the last 50 years as a result of an introduced predator, while other islands in the Mariana archipelago, including Rota, still possess intact native bird populations. We surveyed forest edges on Guam and Rota to assess the influence of two factors – extrinsic (predator exposure) and intrinsic (spider body size, i.e., age) – on web size, web decoration length, and decoration pattern. Web size, web decoration length, and web decoration pattern were correlated with the body size of spiders (ontogenic stage). Web size and web decoration length increased with body size and only smaller (younger) spiders built decorations with cruciate patterns. Exposure to birds did not result in a significant variation in webs size and web decoration between islands. Nevertheless, Guam spiders are trending towards building larger webs and shorter web decorations. The diagonal web decoration was the most dominant pattern in both islands, but the frequency of webs with cruciate patterns was significantly higher in Rota. Despite limitations in evaluating specific mechanisms and replication associated with our natural and large-scale comparative approach, correlating variations in web-building and web-decorating behavior with the ecological and ontogenic factors provides a useful model to assess the impacts of environmental changes on island ecosystems.

The persistent, non-native invasive alga Gracilaria salicornia has dominated the protected waters surrounding Moku o Loʻe, Kāneʻohe Bay since its introduction in 1978; however, a sudden decline in abundance (75%) occurred within a 30-day survey period. The consisent environmental conditions during the survey period, dominance of G. salicornia despite the presence of abundant herbivorous fish populations, and multiple observations of physical grazing by the green turtle, Chelonia mydas, on G. salicornia support our conclusion that C. mydas was the primary driver of the rapid decline of a persistent invasive macroalgae within a Hawaiian marine reserve. These findings highlight the need for high herbivore functional diversity with species-specific differences in dietary preference and feeding strategy, which should more efficiently suppress the growth and spread of any given macroalga and indirectly benefit coral reefs.

Neoaiptasia morbilla new species (Cnidaria: Actiniaria), a sea anemone symbiont of sand-dwelling gastropods on Saipan, Mariana Islands, with comments on some other such associations

Very small, cryptic specimens of a new species of sea anemone attach to shells of living gastropods that burrow in subtidal sand on the shores of Saipan and Tinian, Mariana Islands. We have found members of the new species, which we describe as Neoaiptasia morbilla, on the shells of eight species of snails that belong to five families. We modify slightly the definition of the genus Neoaiptasia (family Aiptasiidae) to accommodate this species. Neoaiptasia morbilla n. sp. is most easily distinguished when alive by its pale column with minute red spots and symbiosis with a living gastropod. In preservation, it is distinguished by its lack of cinclides, relatively weak musculature, bumps on its column, which is not divided into regions, and details of its cnidae. Specimens of N. morbilla n. sp. resemble those of Paraiptasia radiata in being symbiotic with snails and living in east Asia, but specimens of P. radiata are larger, have prominent longitudinal stripes, and have a column divided into scapus and scapulus. The animal now known as P. radiata was originally described as Actinia radiata, a name that has been applied to two species of sea anemones from eastern Asia.

The tropical marine fish genus Plectranthias Bleeker, Family Serranidae, Subfamily Anthiinae, is expanded to include the genera Sayonara, lsobuna, Xenanthias, Pteranthias, Zalanthias, Serranops, Pelontrus, and Zacallanthias. Lizards from prehistoric sites on Ebon Atoll, Marshall Islands

A small collection of lizard bones was recovered during extensive archaeological excavations on Ebon Atoll, Marshall Islands. Most of the bones are from the large terrestrial skink Eugongylus albofasciolatus, the only lizard known in the literature from the atoll. The oldest bones date to 1560 + 70 years BP. Represented by a single bone each are the skink Emoia cf. E. arnoensis or E. boettgeri, the House gecko Hemidactylus frenatus, and the Oceanic gecko Gehyra oceanica. The House gecko was found in the oldest prehistoric strata, the Oceanic gecko in late prehistoric, and the Emoia in historic. Human settlement of the Marshall Islands occurred 2000 years BP following regression on-set of Mid-Holocene High (MHH) sea-level. Lizards probably did not begin colonizing the islands until this same time.

Nutrient Chemistry of the Coastal Waters of Guam

Concentrations of nitrate+ nitrite (NOx), reactive phosphate (RP), silica, iron, and chloride in Guam's aquifer, rivers, and coastal waters have been surveyed at various sites between February 1988 and September 1990. Nearshore waters to leeward (west coast) are enriched several fold over those to windward, and are more rapidly depleted and attain lower concentrations with distance from shore. Also, waters within 0.1 km of shore are enriched in NOx and Si- over those 0.5 to 8 km offshore, especially to leeward. River plumes, essentially all of which occur within a 10 km region, rarely discharge past the reef crest, except during rain that lasts several days. Sills at river mouths shoreward of reef moats entrain terrigenous material in the oligohaline zone that is recycled through estuarine plankton. Total annual runoff from the southern rivers that drain the lateritic southern province is approximately equal to aquifer leakage from the equally-sized northern carbonate plateau. Because the two terrains have distinct geochemical properties, both the type and amount of nutrients delivered to the coastal zones of each province are quite different. Further, individual aquifer subbasins have distinct Si-/CI- fields. As a result, significant differences in biological community structure and production may occur between windward and leeward sides as well as between lateritic and carbonate provinces, but dramatic physical differences between the two coasts makes testing of hypotheses extremely difficult.
