Extensive migration by young persons attending school has altered drastically the population structure of the small community on Namoluk Atoll, Caroline Islands. This alteration seems likely to  lead to a continuing decline in the atoll's de facto population, the continued erosion of the community's self-sufficiency, an acceleration of the trend toward atoll exogamy, and the likelihood that Namoluk's educated young adults increasingly will emigrate from the Trust Territory to the United States and elsewhere in search of employment opportunities unavailable at home.

The comparative morphology of nine taxa of the genus Bostrychia collected from Southwestern Japan, Hong Kong and Guam is presented. The number of pericentral cells of each central cell ranges from two to four among the taxa. The uppermost pericentral cell of taxa examined always contains two nuclei. The ftagellar haptera of Bostrychia tenuis f. simpliciuscula, B. hamana-tokidai, B.  binderi, B.  tenella and  B. mixta consist of ventral and side pericentral cells. B.  radicans, B.  moritziana, B.  kelanensis and  Bostrychia sp. have hapteronous branches transformed from the  ordinary branches. In  some taxa, new  buds are  formed at  tips  of hapteronous branches. In B. radicans and B.  moritziana an  erect branch and a hapteronous branch are successively initiated from the main axis. Each tetrasporangium of the taxa examined is accompanied by a tetrasporangium mother cell linked by pit-connections with both a central cell and the lowermost cover cell. 

The morphological characteristics of Thorea gaudichaudii C. Ag. from freshwater habitats in Guam (water temperature 28°C) and Okinawa (water temperature 21-22°C) are compared. The mean cell width of both specimens are similar (5.2 μm), but the mean cell length of the Guam specimens are somewhat longer (25.5 μm) than the specimens from Okinawa (21.4 μm). The mean length and width of the monosporangia of both specimens are similar.

AII  species of  dicotyledons known from Micronesia are  listed along with their distribution by islands. Basionyms, synonyms and misapplied names that have been used for Micronesian plants are also listed. 1342 species and varieties are listed, 662 of them indigenous, 680 exotic. Of the  indigenous ones, 78  are  endemic to  the  Marianas, 267  endemic to  the Carolines, 24 endemic to the two groups, the remainder are more widespread, 4  are named hybrids. The relationships of the flora are mostly Indo-Malesian and with the Melanesia-New Guinea area. The strand and coastal plants are mostly widespread, some of them pantropical. 

Three samples from each of two microhabitat types (one was sand/rubble under dead coral rocks, the other was solid limestone with a thin layer of algal-bound sand) were collected from Heron reef  crest (23°27'S, 151°55'E), southern Great Barrier Reef. In  total, 931 polychaetes representing 20 families were recovered by seiving through an 0.1 mm mesh. Mean polychaete density for the 3 loose sand samples was 28 individuals/liter whereas it was 480 individuals/liter for the 3 solid limestone samples. For the solid substratum this is approximately 24, I 00 polychaetes/m2. Of the 6 samples, 2 were sorted to species level and four to family level only. The loose sand sample sorted to species level contained 26 individuals, 16 species and species diversity H' =2.65. The single solid limestone sample sorted to species level contained 239 individuals, 41 species and H' = 2.85. The 3 solid limestone samples were more similar to each other than to the three loose sand samples, which were also more variable. The 3 loose sand samples shared only 2  families, Syllidae and  Eunicidae, while the 3 solid limestone samples shared 8 families-Syllidae, Eunicidae, Nereidae, Chaetopteridae, Capitellidae, Amphinomidae, Terebellidae and Maldanidae. The Heron reef limestone samples were very similar in general characteristics to the polychaete assemblages in  truncated reef limestone s'amples from East Indian Ocean and  Guam with respect to the mean density, the numerical predominance of Syllidae and the abundance of Eunicidae. 

The zoeal morphologies of four species of swimming crab, Thalamita admete, T. crenata, T. danae and T. sima are compared in the first and final zoeal stages. Differences are few, but these are tabulated and discussed. The most useful features are: In the first zoea: T. danae has the largest zoeae and the lowest dorsal-spine to rostrum length ratio. Both T. danae and T. crenata have two lateral telson setae (one minute); the other species have only one, that in T. adrnete being stout whereas that in T. sima is hair-like. In the final zoea: T. danae zoeae are as small or smaller than those of the other species, but again have a relatively short dorsal spine; T. crenata is distinguished by having two rather than one cluster of aesthetes distally on antenna I; T. sima is difficult to separate other than by body proportions and dimensions, or by differences in numbers and type of setae on the maxilla, scaphognathite and maxilliped II exopod. The final zoeae of T. admete are not known.

Plectranthias megalophthalmus, P. retrofasciatus, and P. rubrifasciatus, small serranid fishes of the subfamily Anthiinae, are described from single specimens obtained off New Caledonia in the depth range of 100 to 360 m. P. megalophthalmus is distinctive in its elongate body (3.4 in SL), large eye (2.9 in head), smooth preopercular margin, scaled maxilla, lack of canine teeth, and yellow color. The other two species are more typical of the genus, having a body depth of about 2.7 in SL, eye diameter 3.5 to 3.8 in head, a coarsely serrate preopercle with two antrorse spines on lower margin, a naked maxilla, and canines at the front of the upper jaw and side of the lower jaw. P. retrofasciatus has two red bars posteriorly on the body in life. P. rubrifasciatus has three red bars on the body, one Y-shaped red bar on head, and red spots posteriorly on body.

Litoria impura has been treated as a junior synonym of L. thesaurensis. Two "thesaurensis"-like species, sympatric in the Port Moresby area, Papua New Guinea, can be distinguished by their mating calls and by several morphological characteristics. The name L. impura is revived for the species restricted to southeastern New Guinea; L. thesaurensis occupies this area as well as the remainder of the New Guinean lowlands, the Bismarck Archipelago, the Louisiade and d'Entrecasteaux islands, and most of the Solomon Islands.
