Checklist of the Fishes of the Chesterfield Islands (Coral Sea)

The fish of the Chesterfield islands, a region midway between the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) and New Caledonia, have been sampled during several cruises by  ORSTOM between 1984 and 1989. Infor­mation from these cruises and other sources are compiled into the first fish checklist of this region. A total of 866 taxa, representing 134 families, are recorded. 134 taxa are identified to the genus level, of which 58 could be new to science. This fish fauna of the Chesterfield islands has closer affinities with that of New Caledonia than to the GBR. One notices also the low representation of several genera (Neopomacentrus, Scolopsis, Siganus, Abudefduj) which are abundant in both New Cale­donia and on the GBR.

In  1954, Dr. J.  Linsley Gressitt,  with the  help and  support  of Prof. T.  Esaki and  other  prominent  entomologists  throughout  the  Pacific, inititated  the  series Insects  of Micronesia. Its purpose  was to expand  our  knowledge of the  insects of this  region  through  revisionary  works  on  discrete  groups  and  publish  them  in fascicles within  a  proposed  series  of  20 volumes.  Volume  I  provides  a  general natural  history  of  Micronesia  and  remains  the  best  such  treatment   available. Volume  2 contains  a bibliography  of the  entomology  of this  area.

The Tethinidae of Micronesia are revised based on study of over 2,000 specimens. The region contains 3 genera (Tethina, Dasyrhicnoessa, and Pseudorhicnoessa) and 8 species; 3 species are described as new: Dasyrhicnoessa  asymbasia, n. sp., D.  boninensis, n. sp., and D. phyllodes, n. sp. A key to the genera and  species is provided.

Insects of Micronesia Volume 13, no. 8 Diptera: Dolichopodidae Part I. Sciapodinae, Medeterinae and Sympycninae (part)

The Micronesian fauna of 3 subfamilies, Sciapodinae, Medeterinae and Sympycninae (part) (Diptera:  Dolichopodidae)  comprises 29 species of which  15 are  newly described: Chrysosoma guamense,  C. yapense,  C.  townesi,  C. kusaiense,  C. agrihan,  C.  clarkei,  C.  mariana, C. pelagica (also from the  Philippines), Krakatauia  micronesiana, Amblypsilopus sabroskyi, A. ponapensis, A. belauensis, A.  trukensis,  Medetera babelthaup, and Syntormon  boninense. Keys are provided, and the key to Chrysosoma includes all described Micronesian,  Polynesian, and eastern  Melanesian  species.

Food Habits of Migrant Birds in the Mariana Islands

Little has been reported on the food habits of migrant birds on oceanic islands and  some shorebird  diets  are  undescribed. Very little is known  about the diet  of Marsh  Sandpipers (Tringa  stagnatilis) and  the  wintering  food  habits  of  Grey-tailed  Tattlers (Tringa  brevipes) and  Terek  Sandpipers (Tringa  cinerea) are  still unstudied  (Johnsgard  1981, Lane  1987). Most migrant  species that  visit the  Marianas breed in Japan  or the Asian mainland  in highly seasonal environments  that seem  markedly  different  from  small  tropical  islands.  Hymowitz  et  al. (1990) suggest dispersal  by  migrant  shorebirds  as  an  explanation  for  the  disjunct  distribution  of tetraploid perennial Glycine species in the region, and that  shorebirds are  an  important  disperser  of some  plant  seeds to  islands.

Notes on Nesting and Growth of Mariana Common Moorhens on Guam

A breeding  pair  of  Mariana  Common Moorhen, Gallinula chloropus guami, nested  four  times  from  May  to  October  1988 at  the Barrigada ponding  basin  in central  Guam,  Mariana  Islands.  Two  nests were  successful, one  was  flooded,  and  the  other  was  being  incubated when the study ended.  Renesting intervals  varied considerably and  were probably  influenced  by  increased  water  levels and  nest  fate.  Older  offspring from  the  first clutch  assisted  the  adults  in  rearing the  hatchlings of the third clutch. Offspring from the first clutch, one of which remained at the ponding  basin  for the duration  of this  study, and  hatchlings  from the third clutch provided  information  that  Mariana Common  Moorhens pass through  three  developmental  stages (chick, juvenile  and  subadult) during  a  21-week period.  Similarities  exist  between the  Mariana  Common  Moorhen  and  other  moorhen  subspecies.

The population of sheath-tailed bats has declined precipitously whereas the populations of the ecologically-similar swiftlet (cave dwelling, insectivorous bird) have not. The reasons for the initial crash are unclear but cyclones apparently contributed to the subsequent decline.

New Pests on Cruciferous Plants in Yap

Pests  of  cruciferous plants  were  surveyed  on  Yap  Island  during  Aug.  5- 7 and  Sept.  26-28,  1990, and  Mar.  13-15  and  Sept.  20-22,  1991. The  area  of vegetable cultivation  was very limited  on the  island and  small vegetable patches were found  in a home garden type of operation  with very low input.  In a garden of Toply, cruciferous crops were being grown during  all four visits. Chinese cabbage (Brassica pekinesis L.) was the most common  leafy cruciferous crop grown.

When the  relative  susceptibility  of  tomato  cultivars  to Epilachna  vigintioctopunctata was investigated in  a  randomized  block design experiment  at Alafua campus,  Western Samoa,  the results showed that  the  tall, bushy varieties: Alafua winner (AW), Fire ball (FB), Nuu (NU), Sugar pearl (SP) and  Season red (SR) attracted  more beetles than Alafua large (AL) which although  tall  had  small,  less compact  canopy or  Alafua  early  (AE) which  branched  heavily  but  was  comparatively shorter.  However, irrespective of whether the cultivar  was more or less attractive,  the larvae and  adults predominantly  fed on apical main  leaflets  3  to  9  of  the  cultivars.  Both  the  reproductive  biology and  food ecology of E. vigintioctopunctata were apparently  not  affected by  any of the  cultivars,  suggesting that  all of them  were suitable  host  plants.

In  fifteen chapters of text, tables, graphs, line drawings and photographs, Kirch, Hunt and seven collaborators  report  the  results  of a  multiphase archaeological project (reconnaissance survey  and  site  discovery in 1986; systematic subsurface test excavations in 1987; further  excavations in 1989) at the To'aga  site  in  southern Ofu,  an  island  in  the  Manu'a  group  (including also  the  islands of Olosega an Ta'u), in  American Samoa. The  project  was  conducted  under contract  with  the  Historic  Preservation  Office of American  Samoa  and  funded  by  the  U.S. National  Park  Service.  A  National  Register  nomination  for  the  To'aga  site  was  a  direct  result  of this  work.

Book Review: Plundering Paradise, And No Birds Sing

Human impacts on the environment are graphically described in these two very readable books about very  different  situations in this region. Plundering  Paradise is an  indictment  of  the systematic exploitation  of the environment-and    the people-in the Philippines. And No Birds Sing is about  the  ecological  consequences  of  the  accidental introduction of  the  brown  tree  snake  to Guam. Both  also  document  what   people  are doing  to  try  to  salvage these environments.

The  small  book  edited  by Aalbersberg  et al.,  is a report  ofa   1991 conference  in  Fiji.  Asesela Ravuvu  begins  by  setting  the  historical  perspective of  climate  change  and  sea  level  changes  in  the Pacific islands, noting  that  after  the  last  Ice  Age there  was a Climate  Optimum-about 5000 years ago-when average temperatures were  higher than  today  and  sea levels some  1-2 meters  higher than  today.  When  the  temperatures  cooled  somewhat  and   the  sea  levels  became  what  they  are today, many Pacific Islands had coastal platforms, where migrating peoples settled and began farming.

Pacific botany  has, within  the  1993-94 academic year, lost two of its most active scientists, Dr.  F. Ray Fosberg and  Dr.  Benjamin C. Stone.
Ray Fosberg died at  his home  in Virginia on  25 September  1993 at  the age of  85.  Ray  was  originally from  the  United  States  west  coast,  and  received  a bachelor's degree in botany  from Pomona College in  1930. He spent  1930-32 as a botanist with the Los Angeles County Museum, and participated in a botanical expedition to southern New Mexico in  1930; he published several papers following this trip, but had published his first scientific paper-on an ecological theme-in  1929. This  pattern  of jobs,  trips and  publications would be as true  of the  last years of his  life as it was for his  first academic years.

Benjamin  C.  Stone,  the  founder  of Micronesica, died  unexpectedly  at  his work bench at  the  herbarium  of the  Philippine  National  Museum  on  19 March 1994, at  the  age of 60. His departure  leaves a  significant gap in  the .. thin green line"  of  Pacific botanists.  Ben was born  in  Shanghai, China  in  1933; his father was British and served in the civilian government, and his mother was American. Like Ray Fosberg, Ben graduated from Pomona  College in Claremont, California; also  like Ray,  he  attended  the  University  of  Hawaii  and  worked  under  Harold St. John.  Ben received  his  Ph.D.  in  1960 from  Hawaii  and  became  a  biologist on  the  University  of Guam  faculty in  1961.
