Economic Change and Dietary Consequences Among the Tahitians

Finney, B.R.

The romantic image of the Tahitian living from the fruits of the land and the sea is dated. No Tahitian lives solely on the fish he catches, the breadfruit he collects, or the taro he cultivates. In fact, some Tahitians use imported foods more than traditional foods, and all eat some imported foods. The new diet patterns result from changing modes of livelihood. As Tahitians intensify cashcrop production or take up full-time wage labor, subsistence farming and fishing declines. Any local commercial food-crop production or fishing is but slightly developed. Consequently, traditional foods may not even be sold in every region of the Society Islands, or, when available, may be more expensive than imported foods. The Tahitian consumer therefore turns to the cheaper and easier to obtain imported foods. A growing dependence on imported foods is a direct result of economic change in Tahitian life.

Attitudes and Reactions toward Typhoon Karen in Guam (1962)

Guam, a United States territory in the West ern Pacific, was severely battered by Typhoon Karen on November 11, 1962. It was the greatest natural disaster ever to strike Guam in recent years. Approximately 7,000 homes and 510 commercial buildings were destroyed, communications stopped, and the island's power and water system became inoperative for several months. Monetary losses were in the millions of dollars.

Revision of Capparis spinosa and its African, Asiatic, and Pacific Relatives

An investigation of the native Hawaiian species Capparis sandwichiana DC. led the writer into the broader problem of the Eurasian C. spinosa L. and its relatives. They form section Capparis, part 1, Pedicellares DC., are those species with single, axillary, perfect flowers, with asymmetric calyx, and thorn-like stipules. Many early botanists have published upon this group, in whole or in part, but it has not yet been satisfactorily classified. From one view, the group was considered, as by J.D. Hooker , to be but a single species, occurring from Europe to Australia and the Sandwich Islands. Other botanists have split the group into a large number of species and varieties. Another view, taking a median position, is here presented and defended.

Further Additions to the Flora of Guam

Since the publication of "Additions to the Flora of Guam" in the first volume of this journal (Micronesica 1: 131-135. 1964) further explorations have revealed the presence in Guam of several interesting species of phanerograms, which are here recorded. The general conclusion may be drawn that in due course almost all species previously known only from Rota or from Saipan, or both, will be found in Guam, although there may be a few exceptions . To date several supposed Rota or Saipan " endemic" species have now been confirmed in Guam also, notably Psychotria rotensis Kaneh., and the species reported below . On the other hand, there will probably be a number of species known from Guam which will not be found in the northern limestone Marianas islands. One exception may be the small native Leucaena in Guam, which has not yet been recorded in the other Marianas, but because of its preference for limestone beach areas may occur north of Guam . The islands north of Saipan, predominantly younger volcanic peaks, will probably continue to figure as the habitat of a few endemics or at least of species not found to the south whether in Guam or in the Saipan-Rota-Tinian-Agiguan region. Also to date the root parasite Balanophora mariannae Hosokawa, described from Sarigan (Type), and recorded from Alamagan and Saipan (and recently collected in Saipan by Fosberg and by Stone), has not been found in Guam, although it has been found in Truk (Stone no. 5353, GUAM). In Guam there is found Balanophora pentamera van Tieghem, a very different species in appearance, red instead of yellow in color.

Notes on Polyscias (Araliaceae) from Micronesia

Several species of the genus Polyscias J.R. & G. Forst. are frequently encountered in the vegetation of the Pacific Islands, both as wild plants and as cutivated individuals. Certain forms are also well known in greenhouses and gardens in other parts of the world; most of these were obtained originally from somewhere in the Pacific region. There are several alleged species and varieties distinguished by foliage variation, such as variegation or increasingly fine divisions of the leaflets. Many of these are known only in the sterile condition, or at least bloom but rarely in cultivation. The origins and relationships of these plants are thus obscure. Some of them have been given formal botanical names, ranked as species or varieties, but these they probably do not merit. Although some of them have been known to horticulturists and botanists alike for over two hundred years, there has been very little progress in elucidating their position in the genus. Furthermore there is a surprising lack of material represented in herbaria, at least of flowering and/or fruiting specimens.

Man's influence on vegetation and flora is, and has always been in some way, destructive. Homo destruens has, at least in the palaeotropics, influenced vegetation for over one million years and has left traces and scars almost everywhere. We should consider present vegetation as a result of the dim past, see it in Time.

Along the coasts of the islands of the South Pacific Islands, from the Society and Austral groups at least as far west as the Solomons, is a native shrub or small tree belonging with the mimosoid legumes, Leucaena insularum (Guill.) Däniker. It differs from the widely introduced, but originally American, L. leucocephala (Lam.) deWit (usually known as L. glauca) in the usually more numerous pinnae, oblong rather than lanceolate pinnules 4-8 mm long rather than 10-16 mm, heads 1 cm or less across at anthesis rather than 1.5-2.5 cm, pods 5-10 cm long with 6-12 seeds rather than 10-23 cm with 10-22 seeds. The species is not uniform but does not vary more conspicuously than do most widely distributed strand species. Plants from the Solomon Islands tend to have larger leaves with more pinnae while a specimen from Niue (Yuncker 9899) has less pinnae than usual.

The Use of Nicotine sulfate in fish Narcotization

The use of nicotine sulfate, commercially available for crop spraying as "black leaf 40," in fish narcotization is described. Solutions of 5 parts per million were found to be effective in the laboratory, and stronger concentrations were used in field collections as a substitute for narcotizing agents not available in remote areas. No adverse effects on the fish used in experimentation was noted; invertebrates, however, did not generally recover. Use as a collecting agent in the field is noted.

The monitor lizards (family Varanidae) are distributed over most of Africa and Australia, through India, Ceylon, Malaysia , and into the islands of the equatorial Western Pacific. There is but a single genus, Varanus, composed of 24 species according to the most comprehensive account of this group (Mertens, 1942). The foods of these large carnivorous lizards have been mentioned by several authors who watched wild and captive animals feeding. Occasional stomach analyses on a few individuals of various species have been reported, but data from significant numbers of wild monitors are not generally available.

The Lalo Farm consists of approximately 8.2 acres owned by the Department of Agriculture, Government of Guam, and used for crop research and demonstration purposes. It is located in one of the oldest agricultural areas on the island. The length of time this land has been farmed is not known, but it is generally believed to be in excess of 50 years.

Large Crocodile Taken in the Palau islands

On May 4, 1964 around midnight, two Palauan fishermen, Masayuki Arurang, and Jim Skebong, speared and landed a crocodile measuring 14 ft. 10 inches using flashlights and throwing spears in the river that runs in front of the village of Ngeremlengui on the island of Babelthaup. In all, the animal, Crocodylus porosus, was speared seven times; once in the throat where he was hit on the first throw, and six times in the base of the tail. Two hours were required to land it and additional help was received from men in the village that were wakened by the excited cries of the fishermen when they first hit the animal with their spears.

In the preface the authors state "this book has been designed for reading by the general public and for possible use as a text book in the schools of Guam." This well-illustrated, well-balanced book will serve both needs. This is not a dry, dull history but one that reads smoothly and interestingly with certain features that make it well suited as a text. The authors used extensive quotes when the primary source material was unlikely to be available and provided each chapter with a good summary.

This attractive and well illustrated monograph stems from research undertaken in the Ellice Islands between July 1960 and March 1961. The author is to be congratulated for making his research findings available so soon after completion of field work. Previous studies of Ellice Island culture by Charles Hadley and D.G. Kennedy were focused on Funafuti and Vaitupu, respectively, in the southern part of the group. In order to avoid duplication, as well as to gain a broader perspective, Koch concentrated on two northern atolls: Niutao and Nanumanga, and on one southern atoll not previously studied: Nukufetau. His presentation is no bare catalogue of artifacts. Items of material culture are discussed in their functional contexts (fishing, agriculture, clothing, housing, etc .) and much general ethnographic information is included. Although traditional culture is emphasized, and some reconstruction of the past was necessary, because the Ellice Islands are only slightly modernized much of Koch's data comes from first-hand observation . A movie camera supplemented the author's sketch pad and notebook . Listed in the bibliography are thirteen films on various aspects of island life, which are part of the Encyclopaedia Cinematographica edited by G. Wolf of Göttingen. This reviewer has seen one of these (Bau eines grossen Auslegerbootes) and recommends it as a portrayal of Polynesian canoe construction.

Notes on Truk's Place Names

Place names in Truk , in the Caroline Islands, number several thousand. Every plot of land and natural feature bears a name. I have recorded 208 place names from the small island of Romónum (Ulalu) alone (Goodenough, 1951: 167-171). To understand the meanings of many names, moreover, requires the help of local experts in island and district lore. Therefore, to record Truk's place names fully and to analyze the elements out of which they have been constructed are enormous undertakings, that in the end can be done properly only by native Trukese scholars . What is presented here is the barest beginning. It results from a suggestion by E.H. Bryan, Jr., that I check the linguistic accuracy of a list of names he had compiled from published and unpublished sources. It aims to present a phonemically accurate, yet simple , orthography for recording Truk's place names.

In May 1957 I visited Kapingamarangi and Nukuoro Atolls south of Ponape, in the East Caroline Islands, especially to investigate the pandans. During these visits I took the opportunity to record as best I could some of the vernacular names for the plants, whether wild or cultivated, of the atolls. The names for the various cultivars of Pandanus are discussed in a separate paper. This list then is not at all comprehensive, but simply puts on record a number of names, with their scientific equivalents, which are of interest and which have not, or seldom, been previously listed.

Certain of these are placed on record below, involving members of the genera Casuarina, Alternanthera, Desmodium, Tristellateia, Corchorus, Abutilon, Ambroma, Bruguiera, Ipomoea, and Hemigraphis. New varieties, forms, or combinations are published in Casuarina, Desmodium, Corchorus, Abutilon, and Ipomoea.

Large collections made by Bryce G. Decker, J.-N. Maclet, and M.-H.Sachet in the Marquesas and other islands of southeastern Polynesia have brought to light a considerable number of noteworthy records and critical observations that should be placed on record, looking toward eventual floras of certain of the islands. This series is initiated for this purpose. The present paper contains notes on Panicum, Crotalaria, Goethea, Hibiscus, Pavonia, Terminalia, Cordia, Hyptis, Jacaranda, Blumea, and Vernonia, with a new species in Hibiscus. The explorations by Decker were carried out under a Foreign Field Research Program of the National Academy of Sciences, sponsored by the Office of Naval Research. Maclet is a local official of the Tahiti Department of Agriculture, Papeete. The collections of the junior author were made during trips in French Polynesia, sponsored by the Fondation Singer-Polignac and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique of France, and aided by a grant from the American Philosophical Society (Penrose Fund). The help of these organizations is deeply appreciated, as well as that received from local officials and friends in the islands.

A Taxonomic Review of lndo-Pacific Didemnid Ascidians and Descriptions of Twenty-three Central Pacific Species

Twenty-three didemnid ascidian species, eight of them new, are described from central Pacific waters. The taxonomic position of each is considered with reference to other related lndo-Pacific species. The bases for generic and specific determination are evaluated; spicule occurrence is too variable to be the sole basis for distinguishing a species, whereas occurrence of algae is shown to be diagnostically significant because of the discovery that algae can be transmitted by the larvae. The family authorship, heretofore variously credited, is attributed to Milne Edwards in accordance with the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature.

Scientific Information about Micronesia

The Pacific Scientific Information Center was founded in April 1960. Its purpose is to serve as a clearinghouse for scientific information, chiefly on the natural and social sciences, one might say, "Man in his total environment," in the oceanic Pacific (Polynesia, Micronesia, Melanesia and New Guinea) and closely related areas. Its work has been sponsored by Bernice P. Bishop Museum, and supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, Washington, D.C., and aid from other cooperating organizations and agencies.

Eniwetok Marine Biological Laboratory

The Eniwetok Marine Biological Laboratory, located in the northwestern portion of the Marshall Islands, 11° 25'N . Lat., is situated in the most tropical location of any American marine laboratory . Because it is located on an atoll it exemplifies environmental conditions in a rather simple form, and enables the researcher to study a microcosm without the usual complications present in the sea adjacent to a large land mass. Important also is the fact that the fauna, and to a certain extent the flora, is exceedingly rich in numbers of species which present an unexcelled opportunity to study biotic interrelationships and subtle differences so important from an evolutionary standpoint.
