In a discussion of the distribution of Sargassum on Pacific islands, Doty (1954) hypothesized that the genus Sargassum may be restricted to only high islands, i.e., islands of igneous origin. The hypothesis was based on the few records of this genus from low islands, i.e., islands of limestone composition, in the literature and from personal observations in the field as well as from studies of herbarium specimens. The only records were the presence of Sargassum on two low islands in the leeward Hawaiian Islands. Reinbold (1899) and Lemmerman (1905) report S. polyphyllum J. Ag. from Laysan Islands. Howe (1934) reports both S. vulgare J. Ag. and S. piluliferum (Turn.) C. Ag. from Pearl and Hermes Reef.

Mesial-distal and buccal-lingual dental measurements and seventeen craniofacial measurements were made on specimens from some twenty groups from China, Japan, Southeast Asia, the Philippines, Australia, Melanesia, Polynesia and Micronesia. After the craniofacial measurements had been used to construct Euclidean distance dendrograms, the samples were grouped into three relatively unrelated clusters-Mainland-Asian, Australo-Melanesian and Jomon-Pacific. The Mainland-Asian cluster included Southeast Asian and Chinese Neolithic and modem samples plus Yayoi and modem Japanese samples. The Australo-Melanesian cluster included Australians and samples from island Melanesia. The Jomon-Pacific cluster included the Jomon and Ainu from Japan as well as all the Polynesian and Micronesian samples. Post-Pleistocene dental reduction started earliest and has proceeded furthest in the Jomon-Pacific cluster, especially its northernmost members. The possibility is proposed that the original source of the Austronesian speakers of the Pacific-the Polynesians and Micronesians-may have been the Japanese and Ryukyu archipelago. An in situ transformation of Melanesians into Polynesians is the least likely explanation.

Forty-seven ophiuroid species are recorded from the island of Guam. One species, Ophiarthum pictum, is known only from the literature. Ophiuroids identified as Ophiolepis cf. cincta may represent an undescribed species. Specimens of Ophiocoma cf. erinaceus and Ophionereis cf. fusca, respectively, display previously unrecorded structural and color characters. Amphiura duncani was found only in Apra Harbor and may be introduced.

A belt transect 5 m x 290 m was established at Hilaan Beach. The transect extended from the beach, through a fresh water cenote and terminated at the base of the cliff which rises to the plateau of northern Guam. All vascular plants within each 5 m²subplot were identified and measured. From these data a profile diagram was drawn and species importance values computed, graphed and analyzed by statistical clustering. Six distinct vegetational communities were distinguished and named according to computed dominance: Scaevola/Messerschmidia, Cocos, Aglaia/Guamia, Pandanus dubius/ Marsh Ferns, and Merrilliodendron. Each community was described by species composition and physiognomy. Soil samples were mechanically and chemically analyzed. A correlation exists between the number of species present and exchangeable soil potassium, sodium, and calcium.

Recently recovered mortuary data from Rota are examined within the context of existing epidemiological models for island populations. It is suggested that the seasonal availability of potable water from catchments along the island's northern coast was a major epidemiological factor in the morbidity and mortality of late prehistoric and early historic coastal populations on Rota.

The asteroid, echinoid, and holothuroid faunas of the Mariana Islands are reviewed and 35, 53, and 47 species recorded, respectively. Four asteroids, 28 echinoids, and 9 holothuroids are newly recorded for the archipelago. Together with 21 crinoids (Kirkendale & Messing 2003) and 47 ophiuroids (Starmer 2003), the echinoderm fauna of the archipelago now stands at 202 species, with 196 of these known from Guam. That 41% of the echinoderms of the Marianas were hitherto undocumented demonstrates how poorly known even these large, popular, and much-studied marine invertebrates are in the tropical Pacific, even at extensively surveyed locations such as Guam. Holothuria guamensis Quoy & Gaimard, 1833 is placed in synonymy of Actinopyga mauritiana (Quoy & Gaimard, 1833).

This popular guide to seashore plants depicts, in color 120 species, most of which are widely distributed in the tropical and subtropical Pacific. A previous book by the same author, Coastal Flowers of the Tropical Pacific (1980), contained treatments of only 65 species. A special feature is the artful juxtaposition of flowers and fruits in a single photo, which certainly helps in the identification of species.

Marine biodiversity of Guam: the Ascidiacea

Between 1998 and 2000 the first comprehensive collections ever made of ascidians in Guam were carried out, mainly by snorkeling and SCUBA; a few deeper samples were collected by dredging. Artificial substrates in harbors, such as buoys, wharf pilings and marina floats, were sampled in addition to numerous natural coral reef sites. Approximately 117 species in 32 genera have been catalogued, though some of the species are not yet fully identified. The collection includes 87 colonial species and 30 solitary species. Eighty-six species are considered indigenous or probably indigenous. Thirty-one species, 16 colonial and 15 solitary, are considered introduced or cryptogenic; all were collected from artificial substrates and a few of these were also collected from natural substrates. Seventy-eight species were collected only from natural sites; this group was predominantly colonial (69 species). The collection includes at least 4 new, undescribed species. Manuscripts are in preparation that will include descriptions of all the species.

Two new species of stone crabs of the family Lithodidae are described from depths of 730 m, from the island of Guam, the southermost of the Mariana Islands. These crabs represent the first record of the family in the northwestern Pacific south of Japan. The crabs were collected in experimental shrimp traps along with a number of other deep-water crustaceans.

Multivariate statistical analyses of craniometric data from Micronesia, circumMicronesian Pacific, Southeast Asia, and East Asia, suggest an east-west division within Micronesia. Other comparisons indicate, however, that while there may have been closer ties between Western Micronesian and Southeast or East Asian populations on the one hand and affinities between Eastern Micronesian and Polynesian populations on the other, there is a basic continuity within all the Micronesian peoples. The analysis does not support the belief that either the Micronesian or the Polynesian populations were derived from Melanesian populations.

The fishes of the Mariana Islands

This paper lists 1,106 species of fishes known from the Mariana Islands and adjacent territorial waters. Of these 1,020 may be characterized as inshore or epipelagic species, the vast majority of which inhabit coral reefs. Species entries are annotated to include the initial Mariana Islands record, subsequent regional works, synonyms used in major regional works, and justification for synonyms not published previously. A biogeographic analysis is given for the inshore and epipelagic component of the fauna. Benthic and mesopelagic habitats below 200m are poorly known, and existing information is scattered. This paper attempts to include all species of inshore and epipelagic fishes from the region known to date based upon published information and collections known to the authors. No attempt is made to review the literature on species found below 200m. Further, because of logistical constraints no databases of major museum’s holdings were consulted for additional material.

A small collection of sea-grasses was recently made by Alastair Birtles in the southwest Pacific and presented by him for identification. Most of the specimens represent substantial range extensions. The plants came from three localities: on the southeast coast of Upolu, Western Samoa; Malassa Village, on the northeast coast, and Mosso Islet off the northwest coast, of Efate (Vate) Island, New Hebrides.

Origin and Affinity of the People of Guam: A Dental Anthropological Assessment

Dental morphology of Guam crania is compared with that of other Micronesians, Polynesians, Australmelanesians, and various Asians to assess relationships and probable origins. Using 25 crown and root traits of several thousand individuals, obtained chiefly by archaeological means, clustering analyses of multivariate between-group Mean Measures of Divergence show a major pattern of Pacific Basin affinities with SE Asia. Guam dentition is most like those of some Polynesians and some SE Asians. There is practically no dental support for a close relationship between Guam and Australmelanesians. These findings suggest that the Guam population originated in southern Island SE Asia, either directly, or indirectly by a Polynesian-derived colonization of Micronesia.

While most have likely been the result of accidental pet releases, at least one was brought in for aquaculture. Research in the subjects of taxonomy and ecology of reef-building corals would be benefited if we could manipulate the location, species composition, dispersion pattern and abundance of settling planula larvae or of polyps soon after metamorphosis. The taxonomy of corals is confused by the variation in growth form of corals when growing in different habitats. It would be instructive to obtain planulae, or polyps soon after metamorphosis, known to be of the same genotype and place them in several habitats to compare their resultant phenotypes. However, even sibling planulae do not have identical genotypes and they are not easily placed in predetermined locations.

Population Studies and Historical Demography: Context of Microevolution in Micronesia

Underwood, J.H

Demographic models derived for Micronesian islands form the basis for developing hypothetical reconstructions of Micronesian population histories. Population data and estimates from archaeological reports, historical sources and censuses are then compared to these simulated outcomes. The results are used to evaluate extant materials and reconstructions of population histories and current processes responsible for the observed biological variability of Micronesian island populations. The study provides a broad demographic framework essential to better understanding of, and more productive research into, the adaptive processes which led to the ecological successes of proto-Micronesian settlers and their descendants.

Notes on the Annual Juvenile Siganid Harvest in Guam

Rabbitfishes (Siganidae) are important food fishes throughout the Western Pacific. Eight species of siganids are recorded from Guam (Shultz et al. 1953; Kami et al. 1968; Kami, 1975), but only six of these have been observed near Guam within the last twenty years. Of these, Siganus spinus and S. argenteus are the predominant food fishes. Although the adults of these species are sought by the local residents, it is the juveniles that play an important part in the culture of the people of Guam. Traditionally, the annual harvesting of juvenile siganids when they first appear in the reef flats is a major village event. Based on records kept by the Division of Fish and Wildlife and according to local fishermen, the juveniles appear in the reef flats a few days before or after the last quarter of the moon (called Quarto Menquate locally) in April and May. Occasionally a third and fourth run may occur in June and October, again during the last phase of the moon.

Physical Anthropology in Micronesia: A Closing Statement

Underwood, J.H

The present session has emphasized in large measure the critical problem of identifying the ancestral origins of Micronesians, of seeking out the roots of the colonizers of the region's many far-flung islands (Brace et al., Howells, Pietrusewsky, Turner this volume). The discovery of new island homes, a process doubtless repeated again and again in an on-going spread across the Pacific was, however, only the first step. Whatever their ancestral sources, Micronesians are the descendants of the members of those founding colonist groups who survived and successfully flourished after reaching each island's shores. Demographic processes were critical in achieving these successes, as also in producing the genetic and biological characteristics of past and living Micronesian populations.
