Kelloggella cardinalis is a small scaleless goby which occurs in small tidal pools on raised coralline algal ridges and cut benches on Guam, Mariana Islands. It possesses several rows of tricuspid teeth and feeds upon copepods, am phi pods, marine insects and their larvae as well as filamentous algae. Kelloggella is able to withstand a wide range of salinity and temperature. It also has the ability to leave the water and move over damp substrate to a new location.

Since the Australian people first noticed the infestation of coral reefs by Acanthaster in the early sixties, the Queensland Government established a research team to investigate the extent of the problem, beginning in 1966. Mr. R. Pearson and Dr. R. Endean initiated basic surveys and studies on the problem on the Great Barrier Reef. At a similar time when the Australian workers were engaged in the preliminary studies, an infestation of the reefs around Guam was noticed in 1967. After the recognition of the infestation by participating members at the IBP meeting held on Palau and Guam in 1968, Dr. R. Chesher reported the severe damages of the reefs of Guam and called attention to a supposed expansion of Acanthaster infestations in the Pacific coral reefs. In the summer of 1969, Westinghouse survey teams made intensive surveys in the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands.

In 1946 I observed Casuarina seedlings growing in some abundance in the Miscanthus cover on volcanic soils in southern Guam. They had, by 1946, reached a height of the 1 m or more of the tall grass. These seedlings had not been mentioned by E.H. Bryan or Otto Swezey in their talks on Guam vegetation that I heard in Hawaii in 1935 or 1936. So I asked my local Guamanian informants about this. They replied that they had not seen these seedlings before the war, that the Japanese must have planted them. My impression was that the Japanese had unintentionally discouraged the Guamanians from burning the grass. Some actually mentioned that they had hidden from the Japanese in the tall grass.

Traditional healers and modern manufacturers both recommend noni (Morinda citrifolia) fruits and leaves for good health. We determined antioxidant capacity, total phenols, and ascorbic-acid content of noni fruits and leaves in various stages of maturity. Submature white hard noni fruits had ORAC values of 1880 mmol Trolox, VCEAC of 188-199 mg, total phenols of 285 mg gallic acid, and ascorbic acid of 224 mg per 100 g. Their antioxidant capacity was 1.2–2.2 times, their total phenols 1.5 times, and their ascorbic acid content 7.0 times those of immature green noni fruits, and were 1.1–1.5, 1.3, and 1.3 times greater than those of ripe fruits. Young, medium, and old noni leaves exhibited ORAC values of 671–731 µmol Trolox, VCEAC of 7.2-35.2 mg, and total phenols of 14.6–16.0 mg gallic acid per gram dry weight. Mature noni fruit and noni leaves are therefore good sources of dietary antioxidants.

The original description of Atys multistriatus Schepman, 1913 was based upon the shell only. Live specimens of A. multistriatus have been found in Chuuk, Palau and Guam in the Micronesian area. A description of the living animal is presented. Male and female genital systems are described and figured. Photographs or SEMs are presented for the radula and gizzard plates.

We describe terrestrial vegetation communities and compile an annotated checklist of vascular plant species found on the islands of Lakeba (56 km2), Aiwa (1.2 km2) and Nayau (22 km2) in the central Lau Group, Fiji, based on all previous published sources and our own observations and collections published here for the first time. Vegetation communities include coastal strand, mangrove, freshwater wetlands, grassland, fernland and scrub, lowland forest, and cultural vegetation. In 1999–2001, we collected plant specimens and made observations comprising 92, 76 and 279 new island records for Lakeba, Aiwa and Nayau, respectively (73, 21 and 102 of them collected). When combined with all other known vascular plants for these islands, the number of species documented to date is 337 for Lakeba, 85 for Aiwa and 295 for Nayau. A total of 449 species have now been recorded from these three islands of Central Lau. Many (161, 36%) of these are introduced. Among these, 16% are believed to be aboriginal introductions, while the majority (84%) are species introduced in historic times. About two-thirds of the species, 288 (64%) are indigenous to the Lau Group, but only 41 (14% of the indigenous species) are endemic to Fiji. Fourteen taxa, all of them endemic to Fiji or the western Polynesian or eastern Melanesian region, have been documented to occur in the Lau group by our recent surveys.

A compilation of 254 Gilbertese and 153 Ellice Island~r fish names is given which includes names for species from sixty families of fishes. The Gilbertese names (25) and Ellice Islander names ( 17) are also given for anatomical parts of fishes. Gilbertese names for lizards (3), marine invertebrates (95) and algae (2) are listed. The names were compiled from the literature and from interviews with Gilbertese and Ellice Islander fisherman living on Fanning Island in the Line Islands.

Predictive length-weight regressions for 23 commercial species of Marianas bottom fish are derived, based on a resource assessment program of hook-and-line sampling over deep slope (165-240 m) fishing grounds. Species in the snapper (Lutjanidae), grouper (Serranidae), and jack (Carangidae) families predominated in the catch, especially members of the deep-sea lutjanid genus Pristipomoides. Of the species examined, eight were characterized by allometric growth. An index of fish condition was calculated for individuals from the most abundant species, and this was analyzed for regional variation. It was found that bottom fish populations from the seamounts of the West Mariana Ridge were consistently heavier and more robust for their length than those sampled elsewhere.

Anthropologist  Richard Feinberg of Kent State University  continues  his  study of  Anutan  culture  and  so-ciety  with  this  latest  and  worthwhile  issuance  on  island seafaring  and  navigation. (I reviewed his Anutan Concepts of Disease: A Polynesian Study in Micronesica 16: 365, 1980.) At the time Oceania  was opened to the awareness of the western world, anthropologists did not yet exist. Most of the early  observers  of  the then pristine  island cultures were untrained, and hence scientific  studies  of  navigation  with  island  outrigger canoes were  not  made. Many  commentaries come down  to us today, but these  are  more  romantic  than scientific,  and they tend to give themselves  over to hyperbole  and laudation.

Polychaetes are important food resources of reef fishes and invertebrates. Some are indicators of environmental perturbation and reef condition. Species inventory recognizing native and alien species is important to regulatory agencies. Polychaetes collected from coastal habitats of Guam and Saipan, with published records, raise the known number of species from Guam to 104 and from Saipan to 51. The number from Saipan is an underestimate based on collections in many shallow reef habitats identified by Hartman, two short visits by the author and a few specimens sent by a resident. Infaunal polychaetes in sand, rock crevices, and those removed from the digestive tracts of gastropods (Conus spp.), belong to 30 families, 25 known from Guam, 20 from Saipan with five of these only recorded from Saipan. Polychaetes are listed by family with collection site(s). Authors of published records are given for each species. Comparisons of community structure based on species richness, common taxa, and trophic guilds with those of West Pacific, Hawai‘ian and East Indian Ocean locations are made. Using published records and quantitative data available only for some islands, reef polychaete communities of Guam are similar to those of Hawai‘i, Enewetak, and Indonesia in species composition and density. More collections and taxonomic studies would add more species to presently under-represented families in Guam e.g. the Spionidae, Phyllodocidae, Eunicidae and Polynoidae. Families common on Guam reefs and in the Indo-West Pacific are the Syllidae, Serpulidae and Spirorbidae. Recently introduced polychaetes include, Oenone fulgida, Timarete caribous, Thelepus setosus and Sabellastarte spectabilis collected from the floating dry dock facility ‘Machinist’ one week after arriving in Apra Harbor from Hawai‘i. The serpulid, Salmacina dysteri, was also on the dry dock, but had been recorded earlier from Guam. This species most likely reached Guam on the hull of a vessel in transit across the Pacific Ocean.

Man and Turtle in the Central Carolines

This paper shows the relationships, both past and present, between the people of the central Carolines and the green sea turtle, Chelonia mydas (Linnaeus). The report focuses on the islands from Satawal to Woleai, including various uninhabited islands and atolls. Much of the information contained here is embodied in taboos, beliefs, and practices, both past and present, which for generations have been a part of life in these islands. A survey of factors governing the present harvesting of turtles shows that increased pressure in being placed on the stocks in this area. The dependence of these island people upon the sea and the green turtle as a major source of protein make it imperative that the islanders be educated as to the detrimental effect of poor management on the resource.

The Truk Islands are situated within a large lagoon formed by an extensive somewhat circular barrier reef. Gressitt (1954) indicated about 40 islands in the lagoon with six being of some size and height. During the Miami University-Collegiate Rebel Expedition in 1960 collections were made on Mount Unibot, Tol Island, which is the highest peak in Truk reaching 452 meters. In addition, Mount Tonaken (Chukumong), 370 meters high, on Moen was explored. The ten remaining, and lower, high islands remain bryologically unknown. Only Falas and Etten of the atoll-like islands have been reported on previously (Miller, Whittier, and Bonner, 1963). This is but the second time mosses from Truk have been reported and the first time for any records from the high islands.

Structural habitat complexity in the form of cracks, crevices and boulders and rubblefilled depressions in otherwise smooth intertidal windward atoll reefrock platforms provide adequate shelter for predatory gastropod molluscs during severe storm conditions. A typhoon that struck Enewetak in January, 1979, did not reduce abundance or species richness in assemblages primarily of Conidae and Muricidae occupying refuges of these types. On a portion of the platform where a thick algal turf had provided protected sites for predatory gastropods, population density and species richness of Conus species were much lower after the typhoon. Muricidae, more tenacious gastropods whose shell forms are also better adapted to withstand heavy wave action, were not significantly reduced in numbers of individuals or species. Censuses more immediate than 4 years pretyphoon are unfortunately lacking, so these effects cannot be attributed with certainty to the 1979 typhoon. However, no storms of typhoon intensity had occurred during the intervening period.

Kwajalein is the largest atoll in the world and is located in the western chain of the Marshall Islands. As part of a team of biologists from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, I conducted bird surveys from 7–20 October 2004 on seven islets in Kwajalein Atoll that are leased by the U.S. Army. This proved to be exceptionally rich period for migratory birds on Kwajalein. I observed a total of 36 bird species, including 6 species not previously recorded in the Marshall Islands (Common Ringed Plover Charadrius hiaticula, Semipalmated Plover Charadrius semipalmatus, Common Greenshank Tringa nebularia, Red Knot Calidris canutus, Long-Billed Dowitcher Limnodromus scolopaceus, and Common Snipe Gallinago gallinago) and 4 species recorded only once before (Marsh Sandpiper Tringa stagnatilis, Red-necked Stint Calidris ruficollis, Curlew Sandpiper Calidris ferruginea, and White-winged Tern Chlidonias leucopterus). Many of the observations were documented with photographs. The water catchments, irrigated and fertilized lawns, and open fields on Kwajalein Atoll may attract migratory birds, or at least cause them to linger, making their detection more likely. Only 4 seabird species were documented or suspected to breed on the islets surveyed. Eradication of alien predators would greatly enhance the suitability of Army-leased islets as nesting sites for seabirds.

The parrotfish Scarus fuscocaudalis is described from four specimens from Guam and Luzon. Underwater photographs verify its occurrence in the Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan. This species is distinct in having 14 pectoral rays, 4 median predorsal scales, 3 rows of scales on the cheek, the lower row with 1 or 2 scales, and the following features of color pattern: initial phase brownish pink with blue-green stripes on abdomen, the large central part of caudal fin blackish; terminal males pink and green, with blue and pink stripes ventrally; head blue with pink stripes (a broad one on snout passing through lower eye to pectoral-fin base, and another from behind eye across upper part of operculum).

Highly significant differences were shown in substratum preference by undisturbed populations of T. gigas and T. derasa at four sites on the Great Barrier Reef. They favored branching Acropora spp. coral.

Significant aggregated distributions were found on two substrata for pairs of T. gigas (Tg-Tg) and one substratum for T. derasa (Td-Td). A significant uniform distribution was found for Tg-Tg in the highly preferred branching Acropora spp. Aggregation in clams was also supported by an experiment at Lizard Is. Research Station which directly tested substratum preference and spatial distribution on two month old H. hippopus juveniles.

Annual natural mortality rates of populations of giant clams at 4 reef localities between 18°15'S and 14°41'S averaged 1.65±0.54% for T. gigas and 2.07±2 .59% for T. derasa.

The marine diatom flora of the tropical western Pacific island of Guam is all but unknown. Following several taxonomic/systematic papers, this floristics paper documents 179 new records of diatoms identified from light microscopy and/or scanning electron microscopy. Samples were collected from diverse habitats for several research projects in the authors’ laboratories, but the majority reported here are epiphytic, especially from pomacentrid farmer-fish territories. While many of the species are well known from other regions, some recently named, rarely seen, or poorly-described taxa include Amphora decussata Grunow; Ardissonea fulgens var. fulgens (Greville) Grunow and var. gigantea (Lobarzewsky) De Toni; Campylodiscus humilis Greville; Falcula paracelsianus Voigt; Hyalosira interrupta (Ehrenberg) Navarro; Olifantiella pilosella Riaux-Gobin; and Triceratium pulchellum (Grunow) Grunow. A preliminary checklist incorporating the new records and our previous records totals 237 taxa, which is a step towards the development of the regional flora. Many taxa remain to be identified from the documentation so far and few samples have been analyzed from other habitats such as sediments and mangroves. Only 28–42% of the species in this checklist also occurred in lists from the Society Islands, Mahé, Puerto Rico and The Bahamas—but all regions remain seriously undersampled. We do, however note some apparent differences in common and distinctive species.

Des sa creation en 1959, la Fondation Charles Darwin a eu pour objectif principal l'etude des mesures les plus appropriees a la sauvegarde des especes gravement menacees des Galapagos et des habitats qui leur sont necessaires. Aux termes du contrat signe entre le gouvernement de la Republique d'Ecuador et la fondation, celle-ci a l'obligation de fournir des donnees sur le statut des especes menacees et de suggerer les mesures legislatives a prendre pour leur preservation. De plus, avec l'appui des autorites interessees, le personnel de la Station a pris luimeme des mesures de conservation notamment dans le domaine de la delimitation des reserves et dans l'eradication des animaux domestiques introduits. Nos efforts ont produit d'heureux effets dans plusieurs domaines. Dans l'ensemble et sans entrer dans le detail, la situation s'est considerablement amelioree aux Galapagos. Les resultats obtenus se rangent en plusieurs categories.

Understanding spatial structure of secondary metabolites with abiotic and biotic chorographers of chemical heterogeneity in natural populations may allow deeper insights into their function at the plant and community levels. Cycads are an ancient group of plants characterized by opulent secondary chemistry. Cycas micronesica K.D. Hill seed chemistry was determined in seven populations throughout Guam to determine if steryl glucosides would segregate among the habitats. Further, we measured covariables to shed light on habitat characteristics that may help explain the heterogeneity. Seed gametophyte content of steryl glucosides stigmasterol β-D-glucoside and β−sitosterol β-D-glucoside and their precursors stigmasterol and β−sitosterol significantly differed among habitats. Cycad plants from the littoral habitat on sandy soils produced higher seed concentrations of these compounds than the six upland habitats. Concentration among the other six habitats also differed, but was less pronounced. None of the measured habitat characteristics correlated with seed chemistry across the continuum of habitats. However, the littoral site was the most resource-scarce site. Our results are valuable for informing ongoing attempts to answer critical conservation, ecology, and neurotoxicity questions. Resource manipulation studies are urgently needed to validate the hypothesis that resource limitations increase production of these neurotoxins in this endangered species.

Annotated species list of the Bryozoa of Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia

Fifty-six species of Bryozoa are listed from the western Pacific near-atoll of Chuuk, almost all from coral rubble. Fifty-one (91%) are cheilostomes, including 39 (70%) ascophorans and 12 (20%) anascans. There were 4 (7%) stenolaemates and one (2%) ctenostome. Thirty-three (59%) belong to undescribed taxa.

Guam Seaweed Poisoning: Environmental Investigation and Actions

Seaweed associated with an apparent common-source food poisoning outbreak on Guam was sold at a licensed food establishment. Inspection of the sites used for preparation and sale of the seaweed failed to identify a probable source of contamination or improper food handling procedures. Seaweed samples collected after the outbreak from several areas around Guam all contained low levels of toxins suggesting that these toxins may be endogenous rather than the result of envionmental contamination at a particular site.

Our knowledge of the flora of Guam has accumulated rather slowly since Magellan's discovery of the island in 1521, and is based on the studies of a number of botanists, including Gaudichaud, Safford, Merrill (1914), Glassman (1948), Walker and Rodin, Wagner and Grether, Bryan, Stone (1964), and Fosberg, to name but a few. The island is the southernmost in the Marianas Chain, and phytogeographically can scarcely be considered alone, but forms with the southern Marianas Islands-Rota, Tinian, Agiguan, and Saipan-a natural phytogeographic unit. Virtually all plants known in Guam also occur in the other Southern Marianas, and only a few plants occur in the Marianas except for Guam. These are mostly plants of the Northern Marianas, or a few species of Rota or Saipan not yet found in Guam (but probably occurring there). Thus, the phytogeographic position of Guam is essentially the same as for the Southern Marianas as a whole. Our knowledge of the islands of Rota, Tinian, and Saipan, is very largely due to the studies of R. Kanehira, T. Hosokawa (1934a -c), T. Tuyama, N . Fukuyama, and other Japanese scientists.

Natural enemies keep most pest populations in American Samoa below economically important levels. When new pests (such as Thrips palmi and Piutella xylostella) arrive, they initially cause severe damage. However, within one to two years, natural enemies or perhaps other environmental conditions reduce pest populations. Nevertheless, in some cases, such as that of Othreis fullonia, additional biological controls are needed in order to keep a pest below the economic thresh­hold. The success of natural enemies in American Samoa may be due to a number of factors: little insecticide usage, thus minimising adverse effects on natural enemies; mixed cropping systems (eg. interplanting with Coleus blumei); and the presence of the virgin rainforest, which may contain alternative hosts and suitable habitats for natural enemies.

Australia and Oceanic Pacific countries share a number of major introduced insect and weed pests and both must endure contin­uing intrusion of new pests. Some important Pacific pests have already been brought under biological control in Australia and the natural ene­mies employed will almost certainly be of value also in the Pacific. Conversely, some pests  already in the  Pacific, but which have  not reached Australia (e.g. banana skipper, spiraling whitefly), are targets for biological control programs. If these programs are successful (as they probably will be), the reduction in pest densities should help to delay the further spread of these pests. An additional important benefit is that, if other countries are invaded, tested natural enemies will be readily available. There are clearly mutual advantages in close regional collaboration in biological control activities. Reasons for emphasizing the biological control approach and criteria for selection of target pests are discussed.

On May 4, 1964 around midnight, two Palauan fishermen, Masayuki Arurang, and Jim Skebong, speared and landed a crocodile measuring 14 ft. 10 inches using flashlights and throwing spears in the river that runs in front of the village of Ngeremlengui on the island of Babelthaup. In all, the animal, Crocodylus porosus, was speared seven times; once in the throat where he was hit on the first throw, and six times in the base of the tail. Two hours were required to land it and additional help was received from men in the village that were wakened by the excited cries of the fishermen when they first hit the animal with their spears.

The brachyuran crabs constitute one of the most diverse components of coral reef communities. Serene (1972) has estimated that more than 500 of approximately 2,000 species of Indo-West Pacific brachyurans are inhabitants of coral reefs. Many of these species are associated in one way or another with scleractinian corals. Some of these are found living on dead coral or coral rubble while others arc facultative or obligate associates of living coral.

Although the newly metamorphosed young of many species of echinoderms are frequently epizoic transitorily on larger sessile or sedentary animals, it is only among the comatulid crinoids and the ophiuroids that a significant number of species, particularly suspension feeders, extend such associations throughout their lives. Where crinoids are concerned, the choice of perch for rheophilic (current-loving) species is limited by purely physical factors and it may be either animate or inanimate but for some ophiuroids an animate host is clearly preferred and the association is to some extent obligatory and can be termed commensal (or, in the case of Ophiomaza, even parasitic). It is noticeable that whereas the relict fauna of recent crinoids shows very limited adaptations to special circumstances, the apparently more plastic ophiuroids have evolved several unusual modifications correlated to some extent at least with the epizoic habit

Preventing Alien Species Invasion by Pre-shipment Disinfestation Treatments

Globalization of growing and marketing agricultural crops has increased the invasion of alien species in many parts of the world. A prime example is the spread of the agromyzid leafminer Liriomyza trifolii, originally a major pest of chrysanthemums in Florida. Furthermore, the leafminer was difficult to control because the original population in Florida had already developed resistance to many insecticides. To prevent the spread of alien species, governments must have strict quarantine regulations and consistently reject incoming shipments that are contaminated. Pre-shipment disinfestation treatments are a critical component in the battle to prevent the spread of alien pest species, especially to uninfested areas, throughout global agricultural markets. Promising alternatives to methyl bromide fumigation, such as controlled atmosphere, heat treatment, irradiation, and combinations of treatments, can effectively disinfest perishable commodities, especially tropical cut flowers and foliage and potted plants. Collaboration between academic, government and industry efforts will provide the most effective means of pest detection and exclusion.
